Holy Diver help

All right, I need some of you dudes to get into the "Way back machine" and help me out here. I swear years ago I read an article on Dio and he was explaining the "Holy Diver" album. He was talking about the controversary surrounding the cover and simply replied that maybe the Preist is beating the beast ( named Murray ). Regardless he then went on explaining how people just assume one thing by first impression and assume what they want regardless of the content.

Now here is the part I need help with. Dio went on to explain that the song Holy Diver had nothing to even do with a preist or a beast. He said the idea came to him while he was watching the L.A. Lakers in the NBA playoffs. He explained what phrases meant like " shiny diamonds means the championship ring, the cat in the middle? was a team mascot or something......
Anyway so for years I've known this to be true, but not being a NBA fan I really have lost touch with the references? I made this statement at work on Friday about the song Holy Diver and was called out to explain or provide proof. All of which I haven not been able to. I was hoping perhaps I wasn't alone here and someone could help me out. Otherwise Fridays won't be the same at work. Every Friday at 2:45 p.m. we do a Dio power set on the Ipod. Holy Diver and Rainbow in the dark is played trough my Ipod with it's F.M. transmitter, all radios in the shop tune in and crank it up. But now if I can somehow prover my point this may have to come to a crashing end.

Watch Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. Dio explains the part about it being possible that the priest is beating the demon, but I never heard about the NBA part.

It wouldn't surprise me about the Lakers thing. Dio has gone on record numerous times as saying that he's a huge sports fan and has written many of his songs while watching games on TV. Don't ask me to cite anything, though.

Frankly, the lyrics in the song always struck me as a bunch of nonsense. Nothing at all to do with the album cover. After he left Sabbath, Dio's lyrics took a sharp downturn, in my opinion, like he was just sticking interesting-sounding phrases together. Of course, that guy could sing the telephone book and make it sound

Dio's the fucking man, although he's starting to get a skullet. Anyone seen The Pick of Destiny? You know what I'm talking about

I remember all the stuff you're talking about. He definitely said he got ideas while watching sports. But I think that Dio is interested in making sure that things rhyme. So some of the stuff he does could be interpreted a lot of different ways. I think that's intentional, too.

All the songs on that album are like that. It's like, "Here's what I think it means." "That's cool. Here's what I think it means." I just recently had the opportunity to watch some of his live videos and he will make up some lyrics as he's singing. I know he likes to improv.

Ease up on the man. When I'm 65, I can only hope I have half that much metal goodness going on.
