Best phrasing...your votes!
Pretty self-explanatory title...who are your favourite guitar players for phrasing?
My votes go to the following guys... Jeff Beck (the undisputed master) Brian May Pat Metheny Honourable mentions for Shawn Lane, Brett Garsed, and Dave Gilmour. I'll probably think of a few more later... I was listening to Terje Rypdal today, and he's got a fascinating way of phrasing, almost like Steve Hackett's ethereal quality mixed with Brian May's sense of the majestic. TJ Helmerich has a great-but-unconventional sense of phrasing too.
Nothing like a good depressant to chase the blues away!

yngwie malmsteen
![]() no seriously, I really enjoy Jason Becker's phrasing, he has that little Identity to it that is instantly recongnizable and chill worthy. Same idea with Steve Vai. I honestly think that if a guitarist can develop a his own signature as far as phrasing is concerned then you've got a winner, whether I like the music or not... like slash for example, I don't like GnR much but I have a lot of respect for slash based on the fact that his playing is just "unique" in my opinion... so for me right now it would be: Steve Vai Jason Becker oh and Gary Rossington too! EDIT: now that I think of it, I guess the yngwie thing could be taken seriously, since he has a very, uh... "unique" phrasing loll ![]() |

Hmm.
Gimour. Santana (seriously. His shit just flows for me. I love how he sits back in the pocket, then just leaps out of it, only to fall back in with the rhythm.) Dime. Memorable solos. Isn't that the point of phrasing? To put those notes together in a melodically memorable fashion? Reb Beach. I absolutely love this guy's phrasing, technique, tone, emotion, you name it. I'm not as into "shredders", generally, and while I love Yngwie, his phrasing and melodic sense aren't generally his strong point (unless we're talking Concerto, but that's a bit different. In that case, he excels). I'd have to say other guys whose phrasing and sense of "feel" when playing that appeal to me are Wes Montgomery, Eric Johnson, SRV, John Sykes, and on the classical side, I've always thought John Williams to have a subtle and interesting voice.

+1000 for Beach and Vai!
Actually, I would have said Yngwie probably has the best phrasing out of the neo-classical crowd. Check out 'You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget' and 'Heaven Tonight'. |

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Indian slide guitarist), Marty Friedman for sure, Shawn Lane, Allan Holdsworth, BB King, Santana, Chris Poland, Jeff Beck - all players who give me chills sometimes.
Not the original intension of this thread, but I find myself particularly inspired by vocal & non-guitar instrumental phrasing: Miles Davis & John Coltrane of course, Pandit Jasraj, Shweta Javeri, Zakir Hussein (all North Indian Classical), Dewa Ketut Alit (Balinese Gamelan Composer), Arabic Oud & vocal phrasing, flamenco singers, Beethoven, Chopin, Bartok, Ligeti. Damn! There's just so much great music on this planet!!! |
