Goddamn Alice In Chains kicked ass!
Just listened to 'Dirt' all the way through for the first time in a while, and it's just served to remind me of quite how good it is! There's something about Jerry Cantrell's riffs and tone, and the vocal harmonies he and Layne sang that really really get to me...
Wish I had my Les Paul with me to crank out some chuggy Drop D stuff now... |

Yeah Cantrell's stuff is technically simple, probably influenced a lot by the grunginess of his times, but melodically it's absolutely phenomenal.

AIC is one of my favorite bands. I like Facelift just as much as Dirt. Jar of Flies and Sap are awesome of course, their Unplugged release is incredible. Their self-titled one is the only release that isn't as amazing as the others, but still pretty good.

Great band, kinda like the 90s equivalent to Sabbath. The unplugged version of "Nutshell" always gets to me; I can't believe just how many bands have covered and butchered that song. Jerry's solo albums are great too, they should have been much more successful than they were.
I remember reading a Toby Wright interview where he said the huge rythym tones on Dirt came from tracking two tracks of bassy guitar, two tracks that were very mid-heavy and two bright, trebly tracks. They'd then pan them hard left and right and then, depending on the tone they were looking for, they'd just up the levels of one set of tracks and drop the levels on another, which in the end makes mixing really easy. On the few occasions I've recorded I've done this and it really works! |

Why yes, they do kick severe ass! So much so that I play in an AIC Tribute band. www.myspace.com/jaroffliesband

'Coourse nowadays he'd probably just reamp, but still. So, who singing with them now (they're touring right???), Cantrell a great singer and all, but its not AIC without harmonies. |

Cantrell actually played a frankensteined Strat. Also drop d is for suckers that can't be heavy without tuning down! haha. I've always had problems with drop d tuning. Don't ask me why. It just makes me cringe.

If I recall correctly, he actually played a G&L through a Bogner and/or a 5150 Eddie Van Halen gave him. These days he's switched to Dean who are making a Cantrell signature model, and Bogner are making a signature Cantrell head as well. |

Yep, it's an 84 G&L Rampage with a Bogner Fish preamp.

Jerry Cantrell's tone = the perfect mid gain tone IMO, I may have to look into one of those bogners one day after I snag a diezel or vht.

oh crazy, i never looked at the headstock. Just had the fender style body, I figured he just modded the shit out of it. G&L make rad guitars.

Dirt reminds me of high school so much, when I was junior, I listened to that album so much, I wore it out!
Everytime I listen to it, it brings back memories. It's one of my all time favorite albums of the 90's.

I love G&L's because they are a sleeper...most models are very mundane to look at, but they sound absolutely killer. |
