I remember reading that interview in the original issue. Yngwie came off as a bit of a snot in comparison to the erudite McLaughlin, but I suspect that back then Yngwie still thought he was some sort of Viking or something...

This is incredibly ironic to me. As much as I like Yngwie he's basically hasn't evolved at all.

But John really seemed to get some good humor from it too, elder statesman that he is. You could tell they were all having a bit of fun with it, and somewhat 'taking the piss', as our British friends say.

this is a side of McLaughlin I've never seen. Great interview, it's cool to hear the bit about mahavishnu

I also like how the interviewer has balls. For example

My idea was that growth as an artist involves constant dissatisfaction with oneself, and that you seem to have gone into a traditional vein after years of innovation, as though you've completed your journey. Yngwie's old hat, in a way. He's old news to a lot of people, too. Your contributions...

I loved how McLaughlin makes the effort to pay Yngwie a compliment near the start, and Yngwie doesn't even attempt to acknowledge it or pay him one in return...

It really does come off as the brash, cocky youth, and older, wiser master having a bit of a take on him, the interviewer the enabler, but all a bit tongue-in-cheek.
