Very good point. It's not a band whose strengths lie in the artistic side of metal, Robinson realised this.

Also, the production on that first album is AMAZING, perfect sound for the music, such a big part of it.

I always wrote Slipknot off as a gimmick band and never paid much attention to them. Then I went to Mayhem fest years ago and they were there with Disturbed, DragonForce and a ton of other bands. They were the headliner and my buddy and I were going to use their set as a chance to leave before traffic got too heavy. We said we'd stay for a song or two then leave as I wasn't expecting much. We wound up standing there for the entire set, never saying a word. They put on the most flawless, entertaining live show I've ever seen. Hearing the songs in that setting put a whole new spin on them and I went out the next day and picked up some albums. They're not technically brilliant or really even breaking new ground, but they've got "something". I think a lot of it has to do with the frontman as , even with the mask on, he was one of the most engaging people I've ever seen on a stage.

I think Slipknot's a great band. I've been a fan for years. I love the more aggressive stuff they do across all of the records. Iowa is my personal favorite all around album, and "Purity" being the sickest and coolest tune they have done.

I think the masks and jumpsuits have done exactly what they were intended to do, catch peoples attention and set them apart. I'm neither here nor there with my opinion of them, to each their own i guess.

I suggest bittorrenting either the 95 big day out set, or the 2009 Rock Am Ring set.

If their power and control of those crowds don't move you (JUMP THE .... UP!!), I don't know what to say.

Van Hagar was a musical genius, a monster drummer, a competent bass player, and a brilliant singer. Van Halen was a musical genius, a monster drummer, a competent bass player, and a male stripper.

Love 'em.

The detractors can say what they want about this band.

Their music has a lot of power and intensity. Corey might be one of the best front men in metal/hard rock today. Can go from clean and clear vocals to absolute rage in a second. Plus he controls the stage like a freakin' drill instructor.

Are they gimmicky - yes of course. Doesn't mean that they are not fun to listen to and to watch.

I think many people dismiss them just because they're "Nu-Metal" or whatever stupid category they fit in. Bottom line these guys know how to play some intense, kick-ass metal.

Used to absolutely love these guys, pretty much the band that got me in to metal. I used to be a complete fanboy or, "maggot" I guess would be a better word. Still occasionally listen to Iowa and a couple songs off Vol. 3. I'd recommend everyone buy (or download) the Disasterpieces DVD. Amazing live show and the songs are performed flawlessly. I got to see them in 2009, at the peak of my fanboyism, amazing live show. Defnitely one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

I remember showing up to Ozzfest 1999 at 10am and they were the opening band. They just had energy for days playing in front of a crowd of 100 at early morning. Haven't listened to them much since Vol. 3 came out but their self titled still sees a decent rotation. Thier first album just has that grit and intensity that I love.

Agreed to everything here. Similar experience for me too. And I'm one of the few that actually liked their albums post Iowa. They put on a great live show that few bands can match and Corey Taylor is an amazing intense frontman.

As for Iowa being one of the angriest records, to some extent I do agree and I consider it a good gateway to agressive metal for the younger generation just like how Reign In Blood (IMO the angriest record known to man) did for those prior.

Speaking of both bands, I saw them both play at Mayhem Fest, and both were flawless and amazing. Slayer had the edge for me because they played first, and it's next to impossible to outstage Slayer....

What about them is appealing to you? The epic music they create. im a child of the 90's so the early numetal stuff really got my attention. Although i hated MFKR.
When did you first hear them? Fuse. where i hear all good music. At least before they started showing all crap.
What was your first impression, and did that change? I was really impressed by 1) how 9 ............s can stand to be around each other for that long 2) how their music was better than anything else at that time and 3) how they didnt care what people think.

i say theyre amazing. alot of members here might hate on them, but thats their opinion. That being said i think that the time before corey was ....ing horrible. It didnt have Jim on it, so it was the same riff on every song. Mick is good at solos but when it comes to actual riffing, he sucks.

EDIT: also no one can replace Paul, but at least let donnie out on stage. and also, theyve stated that theyre making a new album. SO QUIT PUSSY FOOTING AROUND!!! stone sour can wait...

maybe if they continued on with their earlier sound - last heard on Iowa.
Vol.3 was their downfall (at least i see it like that)

saw them once in my hometown, they were ok and i'm saying only "ok" because the drummer keep missing his double pedal strokes

all in all, the self-titled and Iowa are still my favorites

Here's my band check it out: http://www.facebook.com/badbloodcro

Their self-titled captures an energy and intensity I've rarely heard matched.
I loved how intensely Joey played back then. He played a unique aggressive style where he just sounded like he was on the verge of exploding into a drum solo, but always managed to keep an awesome beat that was heavy on the snare and toms. This really drove the music hard. "Eyeless" really sticks out to me.

As a whole, the CD had a forward push to it that I have not heard out of metal since then.

I liked the self titled album back when it was released. I was able to visit bigger record stores back when iowa was released. So i jumped off there, because i was able to get more extreme stuff back then. I've always had problems with people mixing clean vocals and growls in the same song =)

I posted this a little while back on the Nu-Metal thread, but did anyone completely destroy there original copy of the self titled and go to buy a new copy only to find they removed Purity from it. Pissed me off so badly because that has always been my favorite Slipknot song. Took me 8 years to track down a used original copy and the dudes at the store knew it was rare. Ended up paying $23 for a used copy.

That's why I make fun of your face.

Couldn't get into anything after the self-titled which I heard in 1999. Loved it though.

The best track for me was the one they removed due to copyright infringement. I still have the original CD with that song on it. I think it was called purity.

Can't say i've spun Slipknot much, if at all, in the past decade.

I listened to them quite a bit back in college (I'm 29 now) and I think they're good. I really like Corey as a frontman, he is unique and definitely 'intense'. Mick, Jim and Joey are awesome, too.

Leave no stone unturned until I'm done.

I have been a Slipknot fan since Mate Feed Kill Repeat. I think the addition to Corey is what brought they're sound to the next level. There is a good chance I can play 80% of they're songs. Yes, I am a fanboy. And I'm proud of it. While I don't find All Hope Is Gone to be the best album, Vol. 3 was IMO, it is still great.

Every band has been accused of selling out at one point or another. Lets face it, if you don't evolve with the times, you'll end up like 80s hair metal bands.

Listening to Slipknot is what brought me back into playing after a a couple of years off. The music just made sense to me. Not everyone will like them, and they aren't for everyone.
