The Police appreciation thread

The Police were such a cool band. All three members were such great musicians and, unlike pretty much any other band I can think of, their respective solo outputs don't totally blow. Recently rumours have been heating up about a reunion tour, so in that spirit I thought I'd start a thread. Appreciate!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDdMph0lxuE <--- The stalker song, nuff said. Apparently Sting earns something like $2000 a day in royalties from this one song, which is fine by me as it's a worthy tune.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9iQtivDmXY <--- The chorus to this song still totally throws me off to this day, only The Police could pull off shit like that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G9P5Z9DDvs <--- This is actually a live Sting medley but all the live clips of The Police playing "Bring On The Night" were washed out and the guitar was inaudible, so I posted this clip instead because I love the guitar part in this song, so simple yet so much harmony. *turns to camera, cheesy grin* Thanks, Andy Summers!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_EL_emqISw <--- Here's something interesting, although perhaps ill-advised: Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland jamming a bunch of Police songs with Incubus! (the lame nu-metallers, not Opprobrium). Personally I don't think it works too well but it's kinda cool nonetheless.

Great band. Andy Summers introduced me to add9 chords!

I'd be really suprised if a reunion did happen, as apparently they all genuinely hated each other.

Dreaming in infared...

StevieHimself has a spectacular aura about
I always said that the Police were one of the few bands to write GREAT pop songs that didn't sound cheesy or dated. "Roxanne" still hits me like it did when I was 8 years old, and every album is a winner. Now if we can convince Sting to drop the lute crap (shades of Blackmore, anyone?) we might see a Police reunion after all.

"Bello just played more notes today than I did in 20 years!"

That incubus/police cover of Message in a Bottle was pretty good. I always liked that song.

Satriani introduced me to those chords, but yeah, Andy Summers is a master of the modern-sounding, harmonically ambiguous chord. To me, Summers is the "X Factor" in the Police--the one that made them interesting as a band. Sting is very talented, but he's not so good at painting in more subtle shades of sound, the way Summers does. Back in the day, I generally disliked anything with a hint of New Wave about it, but the Police were an exception just because they were so darn good.

BTW, now that Sting's solo career isn't so hot anymore, I can see him being more open to a Police reunion. My understanding is that he's always been the hold-out.

All i have to say about The Police is that they had one hell of a drummer!
Not my type of music, but I can really get why they're huge and the influence they've had.

Cool vids. I've always loved The Police. I grew up on listening to them. I think King Of Pain is my favorite song by them too. It reminds me of when I lived in Bremerton, Washington. I still have their greatest hits album and I also have Synchronicity live which is awesome.

Ibanez_Dave is a jewel in the rough
I love the Police. Even back when I was a greasy haired metalhead geek, I had all their records and would cop all the Andy stuff I could. IMO, they never really made a bad album. Each one is different than the others and they all still sound great. And they're also one of the few bands that broke up before they started to suck or put out half-assed records. Synchronicity is probably one of the best final records by a band. That's pretty cool.

Their guitar lines were interesting, but i hate the basslines. i never got the hype of sting as a bassist... its just straight 8th notes for the whole song, i cant get into that... but yeah, their guitarist had interesting chord choices.. i like AddX chords..

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.
