Wow. When I clicked on the first link, I listened for a few seconds and thought, "Yeah, this is pretty cool." But, as it went on, I just got swept up in the glorious phrasing. (ok, maybe I'm being a little melodramatic) This is shred that is faaaar removed from wankery. Very beautiful melodies, extremely cool riffs, and amazing tone. Andy, you are the man.

Greg Howe uses a "scrunchy" when he goes into tap mode too, I don't see what the big deal is?
this guy fucking rips, I don't care if he puts an oven mitt on the end of his guitar if it works, it works

Can I be the devil on your shoulder?

Mars Volta can only hope to improve
I don't see the problem with the mute.
I would if someone had learnt with that and uses it to cover up their bad playing but this obviously isn't the case here.

What if you want to use open strings though?

I loved that first video.

That's the trade-off...

There's no ideal solution unless you have one of those dampeners like the one Jennifer Batten had on one of her guitar where you can select individual strings to dampen.

well you just push it back over the nut. If you ever watch a live clip of Greg Howe he moves it back and forth over the nut "when needed" constantly.
