Eh. Individual people don't get to decide whether something is or isn't a genre, the collective of currently participating musicians is. And there's certainly something that a lot of bands are currently going for, and it sure seems like what other people call djent. Genre? Sub-genre? Scene? Movement. Whatever. It's SOMETHING (aside from inherently terrible or awesome

) and I think it's a little head-in-sand to say otherwise.

I just honestly think people try to categorize too much. they let it overly 'define' them.

Like for example, i like to play jazz, metal, carribbean, african, indian, etcetc...aka a lot of styles. I cannot classify myself because people will expect that type of music from me. Musicians should not limit themselves to what they can play and put out for consumption.

90% of today's "djent" is one or maybe 2 guys playing/recording at home via pc and a webcam. it's strange for me to see something that was heavy influenced by meshuggah to have no balls whatsoever - at least for me a good portion of djent doesn't

I agree in a sense.. the genre classifications are getting so out of hand that I don't even know what they are anymore. When someone asks me what kind of metal I like, I don't know how to answer. I ....in' like metal. I might like deathcore, I might like metalcore. I don't know. I like aggressive music, distorted guitars and screaming, growling, whatever fits.

Anyways, I personally think strict classifying of music is stupid, and I think instantly judging it based on it's genre is stupid, and just not liking music for being contained in a certain genre is stupid.

On the other hand, I DO enjoy the specific labeling there is in metal just for the aspect of recommending things to people. The labels that have been made make it extremely easy to accurately describe to someone what they're going to hear and makes the finding and sharing of music much easier.

True. I guess I don't really think much of metal genres as being entirely they're only genres these days, moreso different parts just being different interchangable words to describe the general traits.

This is kinda how it works for me (I maaaay catch lots of hate for this, because I know I don't have the most agreeable opinion on these things probably, especially in this community, but oh well. Just my thought/opinion)

Describing a metal band basically is a utilization of 3 words (though it could very well be 1 or 2 words, and be perfectly fine). There's plenty of exceptions to these vague overall descriptions, but still.

IN THE END: I don't feel genres are something that should be argued over, because in the end it's just a way to personally label a band how you think they sound for the sake of discussion or describing to others. In the end, yeah, the band just sounds how the band sounds.

In a nutshell,for me djent started as onomatopoeia and evolved to an arsenal of sounds.If you ONLY use these sounds,you end up as generic as any other band that's generic to its respective genre (see boring 16th note trill black metal bands).

But if you use this arsenal correctly,you can evolve and just fall into the category of progressive music,without the need to prove anything about djent being a genre.

S'all good, but more on topic. As much as a lot of people classify stuff, I'm happy for someone to say they write djent, where I like to just say its metal. In the end it doesn't really effect me how someone classifies their own music, as long as I like it, then I'll classify it as good.
