Patrick Watson - Truly Beautiful Music.

I just saw him perform for the second time in about a year three nights ago. While the Montreal music scene seems to have sort of fallen off the map recently, Patrick Watson represents well. He writes some of the most beautiful, cinematic music I know, and the band backing him up is outstanding, and the percussionist at times, really shines. Anyway, he just released a new album this Tuesday, and what I heard at the show and online is absolutely astounding. He also scored a film called A St-Henri, Le 26 Aout, which is a documentary about an old working class neighbourhood in Montreal, that I live just outside of right now, and will be moving to in July. Whatever. Onto what's important: A bunch of songs, and the last two are a short film, and the trailer to the doc he scored.

Sweet! I was at the show tuesday night. Really amazing concert, but I did have some complaints. I found that the guitar and piano playing was kind of sloppy sometimes and it was annoying that patrick watson would interrupt songs to tell a joke or something.

Other than that it was great. Mostly new songs, but i like the new ones more anyways.

And how do you see that the montreal scene has fallen off the map? There still seem to be a decent amount of bands coming out of here.

Nice, I was at the Monday show. He did joke around a bit, but from what I remember, he didn't interrupt any songs. I also saw him play a show at some random concert hall in Valleyfield last year, when they had the Barr Brothers open for them. That show was incredible as well, as the band showcased a lot of their improv skills, which was a real treat. I actually really like the opening band at Monday's show as well, Josef & Erika.

In comparison to recent years, Montreal just isn't producing the amount of high-level talent it used to. For a while, we were producing a crazy number of bands spanning every genre. These days, it just seems that Toronto and the Maritimes and to a lesser degree, Vancouver are producing the brunt of the talent coming out of Canada. I'm sure it'll be back, but it just isn't like it used to be. Even in metal. For about a decade, Montreal was home of some prime names in death metal. Not so much lately.

This guy has a phenomenal voice. I'm only familiar with his work with The Cinematic Orchestra though. "To Build a Home" "That Home" and "Familiar Ground" are the songs he's on I think.

^ The Cinematic Orchestra is amazing, and their work featuring Patrick Watson is no exception.
