I'd bet money he was inspired to go back to 7's by Tosin. What with all the nice things Steve's said about AAL.

Just came back from the first G3 concert visit to New Zealand.
Vai definitely stole the show, got a standing ovation in his 2nd last song (whispering a prayer) .... then another one at the end.

I still want him to record a full song with that music be played on the Ibanez 7th Heaven video.

(i think that riff might have been similar to an existing vai song anyway)

Same with Petruccis riff on the same vid.

Petrucci's riff on the video is a Dream Theater song. Just Let Me Breathe is the title.

Just my first thoughts.
I think it seems like it's going to evolve more as the song progresses, it's a nice moody intro to a song, and I'm sure will develop more quirky Vai elements both later in the song, and later in the production, where more instruments are introduced. I'm excited, that's for sure.

Can't wait for the new album, this sound like Vai, no doubt.... and you can feel the passion in his playing especially when watching his face but hell......

I could close my eyes and pick that it is Vai in 5 seconds. Truly a unique player

Vai definitely has his own sound. I've always been able to tell when watching films when Steve Vai or Mark Knoplfer has made the music, they have their own musical voices which are instantly recognisable.

Ever noticed how some people are real dicks on the internet, but when they post something involving their band, they make the effort to be nice? Funny that...

Damnit why did I watch that video before going to bed, now I'll probably have some homoerotic dream, transforming myself into a guitar and waiting for Steve to pick me up and play me

If that's what coming next from Vai I eagerly await the next album.

I respectfully disagree. Vai is in a position where he plays lead all the time, but during his time with Zappa he really had to do some incredible rhythm work. It may not be metal or polyrhythms, but it was some incredible work nonetheless.

Yknow, im not a big Vai fan BUT I wonder if this big resurgence of ERG players in the limelight especially people like Bulb and Tosin being on more of of a virtuoso kinda field inspired Vai to go back to experimenting with a 7.

who knows. cool to hear him playing it though.

Love his personality and outlook on music, not so much the music. Overall still an inspiring guy

My hopes for Vai's tone are starting to get higher after seeing this vid and watching a few vids of the G3 show from the other night in NZ.

The live vids from NZ definitely had more attack, closer to his Alien Love Secrets tone, which was ....ing KILLER. He lost me after Fire Garden, tone-wise. Too much chorus/compression all the time....and the sustainer...not a fan of the actual tone it has. Dig what he does with it, just hate the guitar tone as a result.

And this vid as well...diggin' that tone. ....in' meaty.

Thanks you for posting this piece of greatness. However, I need time to reflect. The happiness is flowing from me FAR too fast.

Glad the UV line will have a bit more of a purpose now

His YT channel definitely leads to some anticipation! This vid must be seen or at least skimmed through. It is a preview of a HUUGE orchestral type piece he is doing. Good insights into his process. I love the part at 10:36
Steve Vai - The Middle of Everywhere - YouTube

Edit: It was performed, actually... hope to hear a release soon! I loved some of the orchestral redos of some of his songs on Sound Theories, like Salamanders in the Sun!
