If a clean tone is dialed in: Rhythm Changes in C, just simple triads once through to get it fresh in my mind, then a second pass with some simple arpeggios instead of chords.
If the gain is up: Symbolic by Death, Redneck by Lamb of God. |

On 6 - Haunted Shores Chord, then Insomnia by Periphery or some of my own material
On 7 - Haunted Shores Chord, then Flourish by The Contortionist or some good ol' Icarus Lives solo, then maybe eventually my own material. |

I usually keep things mixed up. Anything from Deftones to The Facless. Lately it's been Sad But True's main riff in B Standard
No bitch picking! |

The first thing i do to check how it sounds to my ears at that time is pop the switch to the neck pickup and play some E ionian holdsworth type run that sounds similar to how i write.
My writing and playing style is pretty weird, and relies a lot on improvisation, so after that i just improv some stuff in whatever key or mode i feel like. And a lot of the time I just ignore theory and see where my fingers go. "You took the best thing about natural finished guitar bodies and applied it to the neck. I'd compare it to dipping solid chocolate into chocolate mousse, having a lucid dream within a dream, receiving fellatio while having sex, producing energy while burning no fuel. You sir are a genius.'' - in-pursuit "Parker PM 10 trade?" - JackWilliamBellow |

E & A minor, G & C major chords for tuning check.
A bunch of random At The Gates riffs. Benighted by Opeth. I'd probably do more if I played guitar for more than 10 minutes at a time lately. |

In standard I have a tendency to play a friend's rendition of an old blues song called Nobody's Fault but Mine, or Vicarious by Tool if it's in drop D. My guitars practically live in open D minor lately, so more often then not, I play the intro to Ghost of Perdition by Opeth.

Tune, a chord or two, scale run, honestly whatever I am feeling. 6,7, or 8, it's not often the same. But to hear intonation, harmonics, and overall resonance, I always play a few measures or about half of Vai's "Die to Live".

My guitar.
![]() Depending on which one I'm using it'll either be chugging on an F followed by mindless clean derping on the higher strings, ripping off Amon Amarth in B standard, or trying to be Devin in Open C. I let loose a thunderous, metallic 'clang' on my low low E string.
...?! |
