No way can you compare this band to the greatness of King Diamond.
Just my opinion. I never could get into symphonic stuff. I prefer this: -In Maya's Grip, Illusion Transforms Verity... -Will sell every piece of gear I have for an 8-string Jackson soloist (JSL2H8?) |

We've been talking about tastes being subjective, and that's true... but saying that this band is better than Emperor is a crime against humanity.
They're pretty good, but ultra cheesy. That's fun sometimes, though. |

Who hasn't had a lifetime's worth of Emperor at this point, anyways. jsl2h90, I was raised on Them and Conspiracy. Phantom Ship is better than Conspiracy. It's almost on the level of Them. |

Hmmmm... Carach Angren "Then there is this sound like a snarling hound. I leave the room to look around. It guides me to my daughter's room. Her door is locked. I am terrified of what I might find behind. So quickly I climb the stairs to the old attic and find my double-barrelled shotgun. Ammunition. The weapon's loaded. I need this nightmare to be done. Done!" VS Emperor "Where lights are dim and shades of black are grey, from the moment of arrival we are led astray. With nothing but a distant cry from deep within a soul, a wordless voice to guide us on the way. Desperately we name the voice and make the cries our own, as if to deny the fact that we are all alone. In solitude we mingle, disillusioned, we fall prey where lights are dim and shades of black are grey." Right. |

Adam, that might be the weakest take I've seen on the internet.

The weakest take was somebody comparing good lyrics to.... whatever the first set of words I posted is?
Anyway, I'm not here to argue or anything like that, bud. Carach is a cool band, but far from the best. I wouldn't want there to be a best, anyway. |

CA is telling a story, it's not supposed to be cool and poetic. I'm not sure how that could be overlooked. You took us into absurd territory, but that's alright, it keeps the supermegathread rolling

Emperor was telling a story throughout "Prometheus" as well. Ihsahn just did it with eloquence. Hardly boring.

Normally I don't chime in on threads like this...but after seeing its the greatest band out there right now....i had to go listen and watch the vids. Super cheesy vids.
It's decent. I listened to about 6 tracks in total after seeing/hearing the two at the beginning of the thread. I really don't see the big deal with this band...they're decent sounding, good musicians and sound better than a lot of the black metal I've heard lately. The mix on the second video is just bad though. |

i think the thing is, they do something amazing, in writing essentially a musical but within the BM paradigm, which is GOOD and doesn't suck to high heaven. The lyrics are twee and stagey on paper but work well on disc. not too enthralled by the debut, but '...ship' is fantastic. it takes cojones of vast proprotions to either attempt this stuff...

Carach Angren, Emperor, Peccatum, Obsidian Gate, Imperial Vengeance and Obtained Enslavement do a considerably better job of fusing black metal with orchestral music compared to Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir (who ironically are able to afford using live orchestras in both the studio and live as of recently).

Sometimes I think Carach Angren are too flamboyant stylistically, but they are certainly miles ahead of other symphonic metal bands who use predictable, generic chord progressions, tonalities and textures.

Hell yes! Finally a ss.org thread about this awesome band. I love their narrative style of writing, their arrangements, their dynamics, and the subjects of their concept albums. Great take on symphonic BM.

I've said it and I'll say it again.
One of my all-time favorite bands. I just wish I had more material to listen to!

Hmm...after checking out more tracks from them on youtube, I still think they sound like generic BM. Nothing against them and there were some interesting moments, especially in Lingering in an Imprint Haunting, but nothing special IMO.
"You took the best thing about natural finished guitar bodies and applied it to the neck. I'd compare it to dipping solid chocolate into chocolate mousse, having a lucid dream within a dream, receiving fellatio while having sex, producing energy while burning no fuel. You sir are a genius.'' - in-pursuit "Parker PM 10 trade?" - JackWilliamBellow |
