Best NON-Metal albums of 2011?
So I'm racking my brain trying to come up with a top 10 album list for 2011 (Ever Forthright throwing in a last minute kink didn't help), when I've come to the realization: I have no idea what really came out in 2011 outside the Metal genre. The only records I can recall purchasing off the top of my head outside of Metal are from Tech N9ne and Lady Gaga (Techs album was awesome and will make my top 10. Gaga will probably get an honorable mention because, well, The Edge of Glory is just that awesome a track).
So what I'm asking is, what came out in 2011 that was awesome in terms of Jazz? Hip Hop? Pop? Contemporary Classical? Not-Dubstep? I really need a better glimpse of whats happened outside all the.Tesseract and Machine Head and Dream Theater and Corelia and what have you? |

Seeing as I found Weightless by Animals as Leaders in the Pop section of HMV yesterday, it'd have to be that, haha.

Foo Fighters - Wasted Light is still an album I listen to a lot. Other than that?
[edit] I will second Devin Townsend's Ghost too. Who needs bass players? If I wanted something to lay around and do nothing, I'd get a cat. -ArkaneDemon "How can you trust a man that wears both a belt and suspenders? He can't even trust his own pants!" -Morton |

Thrice - Major/Minor
Ghost is a given. Ever noticed how some people are real dicks on the internet, but when they post something involving their band, they make the effort to be nice? Funny that... |

Really? For shame! =) Let me see what I can do to help.... Any year with a Decemberists release is a good year, and this song has an awesome video to boot: Guitar + cello + treacle = Earth. Volume II comes out next year. Forget that dancefloor R&B shit - if you want the real deal, check out Meshell Ndegeocello. Sexy tune from a sexy and complex album. Paul Simon's new album is his best in twenty years. How can you pass that up? TOM WAITS, ............! The new Tori Amos record is a concept album, so any individual song is sorta out-of-context, but this one carries the character of the album pretty well. Stonegaze! Also: the longest album title of the year, at least out of my collection. And finally, a meeting of the masters: Tony Levin, David Torn, Alan White. Go forth enlightened, grasshopper. "There's only one real freedom in music: freedom from the tyranny of trying to sound good." -Kenny Werner "Whatever technique you have on your instrument at any given time is always good enough to say something. If you can't find the thing to say, that's what you've got to work on." -David Torn "Don't be afraid to let go of the things you know. Defy your weaker, safer self. Create. Make music." -Sonny Sharrock "Do your thing. Follow your heart." -David Fiuczynski |

I am surprised how few fusion albums seem to be favored here.I always thought that was a natural genre for guitarists in metal who were technically oriented

Were there some good fusion releases in 2011? Apart from the Levin Torn White disc I mentioned, which is arguably fusion, I'm not really aware of any, but I haven't paid a lot of attention either. (Maybe because I'm not a technically-oriented metal guitarist? *shrug*)

M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
Bon Iver - Bon Iver Thrice - Major/Minor I'm pretty sure that new M83 album is my favorite of the year overall. |
