Most Unique Offering of the Year?

Alright so everyone always talks about what the best albums were, or who the best guitarists were.

What band or musician do you think really stood out from the pack this year not by playing the craziest solo or the most syncopated riff, but for putting out something that actually stood apart and made a mark in your mind?

My vote goes to Unexpect for their album Fables of the Sleepless Empire. I've been following them for a long time, really digging their whole Nightmare Before Christmas/lounge/metal feel, and this album blew me away not because it was the greatest album ever but because it was so different from everything else put out this year.

I've always said that music should not be judged based in visual aspects (referring to a band's look for example), but these two bands not only realeased unique music this year, they added some nice interactive visuals.

Maybe compared to the first flecktones albums 20 years ago it' not THAT different (still going new places though), but compared to all other music (that i have heard anyway) it's way out there and unique

Amazing

Also amazing, and mental time signatures here too! (11/8 ?? )

ICS Vortex's "Storm Seeker". Really, really good "proggy" album that came out of the blue. Totally unexpected. Also Cthonic's "Takasago Army".

^You serious? Gloom sounds like if JFAC applied their usual monotony to a Black Dahlia Murder album...

Anyway, IMO, Lantlos - Agape

Nothing sounds like this. Not Alcest, not other post-BM (such as Deafheaven), not even their own material. It's just... post-everything.

Need to second Last Chance to Reason. Unique riffing style, creative song structures, very unique vocal approach as well as lyrical content, as well as overall feel of the album. No others come close in my most humble of opinions.

One might think 'Oh, it's just like Periphery with jazz' or whatever, but the application of cool jazz breaks and the blending of jazz instruments and metal used to serve an ultimately unique album feel. Other bands may do the combination, but they don't sound anything like this:

Yeah, that pretty much sums up my reaction, although I wouldn't label this "jazz" - it's djenty metal with a bit of saxophone. Maybe I'm just getting old and jaded, but this doesn't sound nearly as innovative (with respect to hybridizing jazz with more aggressive music) as what Candiria was doing ten years ago, or what Last Exit did in the mid-80s. I like the guitar player's note choice for his solo, though - it's a bit more adventurous than what I'm used to hearing from most metal players right now.

EDIT: I'm listening to their album on Bandcamp right now, and I think that this particular track is not the best to showcase their jazz tendencies - the break in "Latency and Tendencies" is straight-up jazz soloing, swing and all. I'm still not sure it's especially innovative given a wider view of metal history, but it's more pronouncedly jazz than I'd thought based on one song.

yeah, candiria were much better at it, agreed.

no offense, but this sounds like periphery with songs that are too long.

and even though chris has a great voice, he doesn't seem to be able to write memorable vocal lines, at least not to my liking.

despite the obvious serious chops, the band really does nothing for me.

love this album btw, they were really one of a kind when they came out, too bad candiria became such a generic band after their bus accident.
