Talking Dave Weiner - I've set up an interview!

All,
I know Chris & others usually do the interviews here, so I hope I'm not stepin' on any toes. I was chatting with Dave Weiner (Vai's right hand man) tonight. After 30 minutes of general talk, I got the courage to ask him he'd do an interview for sevenstring.org. To my delight he said "yeah sure!"
So, I said I'd gather up some questions from everyone, along with the mainstay questions, and IM him again this weekend for the interview!
I'm stoked! So post your Qs for Dave!!!

BTW here's a snippet discussing pickups:

Daveweiner1: hey man, whats happening
MR2MkII: ...still getting used to my new 7620..
MR2MkII: Nice black w/AN in neck, EVO in bridge...though I prefer the Tone Zone 7... Looks allot like the one Rita gave you...
Daveweiner1: yeah i'm not a big evo fan either
Daveweiner1: i have the Blaze on my latest 7 string, i love them

Just to be the first cockhead to say it, Dave is Steve's left hand man.
Tony's on the right...

Cool. I'd like to know Dave's role with Steve. What's expected of him, what's not, that kind of thing.

Exclamation Sweet!

I recently saw the Vai tour last moth and picked up Dave's CD at the show. The disk is freakin' brilliant! Honestly it was while listening to his CD and surfing ebay that I picked up a 7 string guitar, and ended up here...

I would like to hear more about his own band and some of his other projects especially his work on many of the Line 6 Guitar Port backing tracks.

Also, tell him "Dan from Seattle says hi, and next time he is town maybe we could hook up a lesson". (not that we have ever met, mind you but it would be cool to sit down with him)

Of course I meant figuratively... Yes on the recent tours Dave have been positioned on the left of Steve, but he's still the principle rythym guitarist.

Yes Dave's album, though he's capable, is no shred fest...just a set of great tunes that really get ya goin. "Tourmaline" is my favorite! The first full song I learned on my 7 was "Dave's Party Piece"! (My cover of DPP) Currently I'm working on the heavy riff from "Long Run", which is a killer line, lots of string skipping (From B to B in some places). I've only progressed up to 112 BPM and he plays it at 137!!

Keep the Qs for Dave coming!

Definately awesome. Nice one, Brian. Ask him what his major influences are.

That's awesome, Brian!

Could you ask him if he plans on staying with Vai indefinitely or does he see himself breaking away at some point to pursue his solo stuff?

Also can you ask him which body wood he prefers and why? Noticed he had 3 different 7s with different body wood. Curious which one he prefers.

No prob Chris... I'll send it to ya right after the interview.

Dave is very down to earth, as can be seen on Disc 2 of "Vai: Live in Astoria" It's great to talk to him online...just like another guy...nothin's gone to his head.

Yeah Dave tends to use certain woods for clean vs dirty guitars. I know he prefers maple necks for it's sustain.

Dpmasunder, you should check out that DVD above for a glimpse into what Steve requires of Dave on tour!

Alright I've added the new questions to my sheet! Keep 'em comin!

I've seen Vai with Dave a couple of times, does the DVD have behind the scenes stuff?
From my brief encounter with Steve himself I've got to say he is one of the most genuinely nice and down to earth people I've met, I'm not surprised to hear Dave is too.
