I love everything that has been posted so far. We should all be thankful, however, for the forefathers of Art Rock: King Crimson and Pink Floyd. I don't think we would be listening to any of the above bands without their pioneering work. So, here are some of my favorites from them.

Also, I don't know if they necessarily are in the Art Rock genre, but I think some of Ulver's work would definitely be classified as Art Rock.

In "modern" music, bands such as Porcupine Tree, Tool or Sigur Ros are considered Art Rock to me. Anything that has a feel like those artist really. What about you?

This is my point. There is a difference between art rock and a prog band with fancy album covers imo.

I like lots of Alan Parsons stuff, this was credited as Freudiana/Eric Wolfsons solo lp but really its typical Alan Parsons Project. great track and insanely good production....

I'd probably say that the main difference between what i consider progressive and art rock would be that progressive rock is usually a lot more musician oriented (more technically demanding, extended solos) whereas art rock is basically a form of progressive rock that generally isn't as technical but the songs are very lush and ambitious sounding. I'd say Art Rock is also more song-writer oriented rather than coming from an instrumentalist mentality ala prog. Most art-rock could very well find its way on the radio, as it has a lot more catchy and digestible melodies compared to most prog, but often has un-radio friendly song lengths and unconventional structures where verses and choruses are pretty much non-existent sort of like in a musical or opera (in some songs anyway). Of course, I'm just generalizing.

I always thought art rock was more out there, conceptually charged music where visual content is supporting the music.
