Mike Portnoy + John Sykes Power Trio

Mike Portnoy and John Sykes Join Forces in New Supergroup | Guitar World

Quote:
Ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has joined forces with Thin Lizzy guitarist/vocalist John Sykes and an as-yet-undisclosed bassist in a new power trio. The project has demoed 12 songs so far at a Los Angeles studio, with Portnoy describing one track as "copping the Zeppelin/Sabbath vibe" and another as "Pink Floyd meets Deep Purple!!! Some serious old-school classic rock."
In a posting on his official web site, Portnoy described the new group as "a completely ridiculous modern-day power trio" and calls it "real band" as opposed to a side project.
He adds, "I will divide my time as best as I can between the two (hey, if Corey Taylor and Jim Root, Mike Patton, Joe Satriani and Chad Smith, Zakk Wylde all can do it, so can I!) and I am equally excited by both... as they are both amazing new bands, but VERY different worlds musically... so there's really no clash creatively. Timing-wise, Adrenaline Mob is happening NOW, and my band with Sykes won't be released later next year, so they'll be able to co-exist just fine!"
Portnoy and Sykes appeared yesterday, Monday, July 25 at a taping of season eight of VH1 Classic's That Metal Show. The program's co-host Eddie Trunk tweeted about their new collaboration, "I heard demos. Sounds like killer Blue Murder meets '1987' Whitesnake. Amazing!"
Blue Murder + Whitesnake?

Please don't let me down guys!

This has the potential to be frakin' awesome. Or ungodly horrible. Obviously, I hope for the former.

Now to speculate who the bassist will be...

Eddie Trunk mentioned this on his Twitter account the earlier today, too. I am stoked to see how this goes. As far as bass players go.... Hmmmm.... How about Tony Levin? I'd be all over that!

I was never a "classic rock" guy really but it's nice seeing Portnoy keep doing stuff... Thought if he'll start another project in the upcoming month It'll start getting suspicious

Word

It's amazing to me that John Sykes admits to having learned much of his vocals from Phil and although at times he does sound quite a lot like him, he's also managed to develop his own style.

I'm so hoping this turns out to be a great power trio collaboration. It does seem that even mentioning the words "power trio" can be a death-knell at times....^^

Oh, it's not a bad thing but I like the fact it's something he can adopt when required. One or two of the Thin Lizzy songs sounded uncannily like Phil......much more fitting than the current vocalist

Sykes just rules! So happy he is working on new material.

Read an interview with him in an Old Guitar World I got from like 1990 time and apparently before Tygers... he was a builder/brickie on the island of Lanzarote and was engaged to be married and stuff and had basically given up playing as "real life" was taking over bills and work and wife to be.... then a mate asked him to jam and play with his band and it reignited his love for music and was given the opportunity to go back to the UK to play for what (if I remember rightly) ended up being Tygers of Pang Tang, but his fiancee wanted him to stay in Lanzarote and work and get a house and kids and stuff and not to be stupid and throw it all away. So as he said he had the choice. Safe life on the island or risk it all and go to the UK... thank .... he decided to dump the missus/job and sh1t and take a chance!!! Can you imagine a world with no 1987 Whitesnake album? No Nuclear Cowboy CD? No thunder and Lightening? We All Fall Down? No Still of the Night??!!!!
