Reflux - Tech Metal Supergroup From The Past
So, an old, but GREAT, technical metalcore band I found, released on Prosthetic Records in 2004, they're called Reflux. They feature Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders/TRAM) on guitar, Evan Brewer (The Faceless/ex-Animosity) on bass, Ash Avildsen (Sumerian Records founder) on vocals, and Vinnie Vinh on drums. They were intending to release an album in 2007, but went on hiatus, and Tosin did AAL, Evan did Animosity, and Ash did Sumerian Records. They're an example of what I think AAL could be with a vocalist, at some points, and if you enjoy technical metalcore, you'll enjoy this.
Not gonna lie, I would not mind if Evan Brewer left The Faceless, and Animals as Leaders broke up if it meant a Reflux reunion. "I wonder if Kurt rolls his eyes everytime we come up with a new idea. 'Oh no. Not ss.org, again. NOW WHAT?'" - I_infect "For all we know is some super bass wizard the likes of which hasn't been seen since Gandalf invented the bass." - heavy7-665 |

I would completely mind if those bands broke up for a Reflux reunion.
Animals As Leaders is by far superior to 99% of anything I have ever heard. Reflux is cool and yea I listen to them, but if AAL broke up for this... Do not want. Not to mention TRAM also kicks all kind of ass. An Ode is awesome song though

Hey thanks! I've been trying to find some of their songs to give them a listen. Oh and the bassist from Animosity? I'm in, srsly animosity so much win!
EDIT: Yeah, I like it, but I'd much rather have those groups stay together. This doesn't seem like Tosin playing to his full potential. |

I dunno, he plays more Animals as Leaders sounding riffs throughout the album. The only limit on his playing on that album, as opposed to Animals as Leaders, is that he's playing a 7-string instead of an 8-string.

CAFO was actually suppossed to be a Reflux song
![]() I love this band. Actually one of the first modern metal bands I got into back in high school through a random Myspace discovery

Yeah, when I first heard them, all the Youtubers were like, "Well this sounds nothing like Tosin's playing," and I was like, "Has anyone ever heard CAFO?!"

my first metal(core) show was a reflux show, and some horrible band opened, i just remember seeing a black guy with a universe. had no idea it was tosin until i saw him with boo. and i had NO idea that Ash Avildsen was there vocalist until now weird.
Check out my band http://www.facebook.com/ForsythiaOfficial ![]() My youtube youtube.com/therealgtarbeast666 I don't think that we ever thought of it as the equivalent of music, as the end-goal was to buy more in-game slut clothes-- schecterwhore on rock band Im a super chill mellow ambient slut. --7 STRINGS OF HATE |

I know I might be rather alone with this opinion, but to me AAL always sounded like a perfect display of what is possible with 8-string guitars... more like a number of tech-demos than actual songs (as opposed to, for example, Jean Baudin's solo stuff). Impressive and maybe inspiring from a musicians point of view, but that's it. This, however, sounds like some cool songs to me

Breaking AAL up to reunite Reflux would be like devolving (de-evolving?) the human population back to monkeys IMO.
Xavier and Naviene are a much better contributions to Tosin's great mind.

Although I loved Reflux many years ago, I must say that I enjoy Animals as leaders and the faceless much more. But don't get me wrong this album is still killer and makes me quite nostalgic.

Big reflux fan, nabbed their album for real cheap of the indiemerch a few years back I think. Killer stuff. If you compare it to AAL, it's kind of the diamond in the rough stage, this was before he went to Atlanta for music schoolin', IRRC. Great music!

A Reflux reunion should never ever ever be the reason AAL breaks up.

This is probably my favorite "metalcore" album.
@00:47. Though it has some highlights, i get the impression that most of the sweeps/solos weren't recorded as tight as they could be, maybe they wanted it to be a bit raw perhaps? |

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this band. Discovered them around a year ago from the AAL Wikipedia page, I didn't even realize Tosin was in a band before AAL, and then I listened to the album and was like...
![]() I know I'm in the minority but all in all I actually WAY prefer this band to AAL. I actually asked Tosin, when I met him when AAL opened for Dillinger, if he thought there would ever be a Reflux reunion, and he said no, it's completely in the past. |

Reflux reminds me of AOJB-Killswitch Engage + Heavier AAL moments. And it totally works.
And apparently, I saw these guys open for Strapping Young Lad, Darkest Hour, and Misery Signals yeeeaaarrrsss ago. |

totally, that goes for a lot of the guitar work on that record. i guess there was some sort of intention behind it, we all know tosin can play spot on.

I admit I'd never actually ever gotten around to listening to Reflux before.
Damn, that's some pretty good stuff actually. Not so sure about those vocals, but I think they could grow on me, as I love the rest of it. |

I played a show with Reflux back in 03 ...I think Caliban and AILD headlined, can't really remember now. I knew when I saw Tosin in the back that he'd be a guitar icon someday. He only incorporated a handful of sweep arpeggio shapes at the time and I think was rocking a Digitech RP pedal (he used the looping function on there quite a bit).

Tosin was still developing his skills at that time...so what's on that record is probably what he could do at the time. I get the feeling he is a very fast learner, thus why he has progressed so much since then.
