this genre definitely hit its peak around 2003-2005 and there's pretty much nothing but Neuroisiselican clones coming out ever since that don't offer much of anything new. (a couple exceptions here and there obviously)

these are the five albums everyone needs imo.

Isis - Oceanic

Neurosis - Times of Grace

Cult of Luna - The Beyond

Mare - s/t

Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye

one of those five will do it for me whenever I'm in some type of post metal mood.

Well, lets give it a whirl then.

This is more post-black metal, but I love the shoe-gazy dreamy guitars that come in about half way through. Literally sends chills down my spine.

Yeah. Alcest is great. He's (Neige is his name) got some other projects, like Lantlos that are pretty good. There's another related group called Les Discrets. As you can guess, they are all French. LOL.

Then he's in another group called "Ameseours," which to me sounds like shitty chick rock with tremolo picking and blast-beats, but most people who like his stuff like them too.

^Alcest are one of my favorites.

There is a quite a thin line if you ask me from post metal and post rock. Very easily will bands weave back and forth over that line, so its hard sometimes to recommend strictly post metal groups because it would be a shame to not mention some notable post rock.

Burst is the only other post metal I listen to that hasnt been listed already.

Russian Circles: easily one of my most favourite bands. Hard hitting but delicate and technical at times. And (IMHO) one of the most delicious guitar tones evar.

Off their newer album, a bit more direct and heavy than their previous work.

Classic. Probably their best song.

I'm loving Russian Circles, and I'm liking a lot of bands in this thread.

I'll show my ignorance here, WTF is post metal? I'm hearing the similarity to the music, but how did it come to be called post metal?

From my own observation, its metal that leans moreso on atmospheric/ambient elements. Metal that has an "airiness" to it.

Post-rock + metal, more or less. Also known as 'lazy music journalists'.

It mainly came out of sludge metal and hardcore, and is largely characterized by mid-tempo, linear compositions with heavy guitars, and a central focus on dynamics. (such as in post-rock)

Let's see what's been left out...

If These Trees Could Talk - Not heavy like some of the bands, but really atmospheric. A nice mixture of bands like Isis and Explosions in the Sky. Maybe you could call them post-rock? If anything, I bet Ryan likes this band.

Made Out of Babies - Really ....ing bizarre post-metal with a female vocalist. Features Brendan from Red Sparowes and Julie from Battle of Mice. It's a combination of noise rock and post-metal.

Pelican - How can you ....ers forget about me? Some of their songs are so ....ing heavy.

Rosetta - This band draws influence from so many different styles. Post-metal, shoegaze, ambient, drone, etc... Get into them.

Callisto - I have little information on this band. They're from Finland and I'm pretty sure they're Christian (at least the vocalist is). They use lots of different instruments like cellos, saxophones, English horns, etc.

Try going with some Light Metal if Heavy Metal is getting to boring or heavy for you.

Going for a second post here!

Intronaut - Now here's an interesting band for ya'. Danny Walker (Jesu/Phobia/Exhumed/et cetera) on drums? .... yes. Leon (Exhumed/Phobia/Impaled/et cetera) used to be on guitar. Coming from two HUGE ....ing grind bands, this is something quite different, but ....ing awesome. Harsh-vocals, melodic breakdowns, wicked drumming, and all the good stuff!

Irepress - Another band I know nothing about. This another band that's all over the place. They have some beautiful atmospheric music by times, that can quickly get heavy. All I know is they've shared the stage with Masta Killa .

Mouth of the Architect - Sludge/post-metal band from Dayton, Ohio. Plain and simple.

There are so many good ....ing bands out there!
