"Why do we still bother with encores?"

Why Do We Still Bother With Encores? - Page 1 - Music - Dallas - Dallas Observer

Interesting article.
And I agree. Last concert I saw was
Animals as Leaders in Feb and they played
most songs from the album. However, if
they were a bigger band and more people
were into it then it would have been nice to see
them come back out and play Soraya or Inamorata.
Something that wasn't CAFO or Tempting Time.
(that's just an example)

I've never gotten to see a true Encore performance
since I was probably 5-6 when I saw Paul McCartney
and his encore was stuff from Wings and a few random song.
Nothing that was classic Beatles songs if you get what I mean.

It's interesting Zakk Wylde doesn't do encores and I'd like to
see some more bands "bring back" the encore.

Just my

Hope you enjoy the article.

Devin Townsend, Dream Theater and KoRn does encores. I actually thought it was a custom to do at least one encore song if the crowd demanded it and they got the back catalogue to support it. O.o

encores are "fake" 98 percent of the time.

they are already planning on playing those songs. they just leave the stage for a couple minutes and make you wait a bit before playing a couple more.

a real encore would be if the venue turned on the lights and had to turn them back off again because the crowd wouldn't leave or stop chanting after the gig until they heard one more song.

Best encore I've seen to date was helloween/gamma ray. After each played their set, they ALL came out together and played some classic Helloween tunes together. Kai playing w/ helloween is something I wanted to see once in my life. Mission accomplished.

Good read, and I'm in full agreement.

The last time I saw a 'real' encore was actually my first concert: Billy Joel's 'Storm Front' tour in 1993. He actually did 4 encores that night, 1 song each. Every time he left the stage, the lights came up and the venue staff was directing attendees to go home via the house PA. Still, the crowd would not settle or disperse, nor extinguish their lighters or stop shouting at the top of their lungs. I do believe that he returned to the stage each time simply to avoid a riotous outbreak from the audience.

Conversely, when I went to see the NIN|JA tour a couple years ago, Jane's Addiction did one of those obviously planned encores; leaving the stage for a couple of minutes while the crowd barely made any noise at all, then returning to the stage to play 'Jane Says', as if anyone believed for even a fraction of a second that they wouldn't have played that song at some point in the evening. Lame.

Yea this guy speaks the truth.

In the one Dream Theater DVD you can see their "encore" list on their setlists

BTW - the answer to the question is painfully ignored in the article.

The "encore" has come to be expected at shows. So when the band plays and DOESN'T do it, if the audience is expecting one they will be leaving disappointed.

Yeah most bands have the last song on their setlist listed as "encore", and it's usually their most popular song. So you know they'll play it, it's just a stupid tradition.

The problem is, for a real encore, the band should be not planning on playing the song, so the song will be unrehearsed, and some bands just can't do that.

I watched Periphery's album release concert, and they did a real encore of Zyglrox, it was the first time they played the song together, and they were very anxious about their performance. It turned out awesome anyway, but not every band has the chops/balls to do it.

Bad Religion just keep playing until the house lights come on. Much better way to spend the time than going off stage to keep the audience cheering for another song. Encores are just ego-massages in my opinion.

Went to see Manowar on Sunday, and towards the end they were off the stage between almost every song, milking the applause.
That said, Manowar are pretty much a parody of themselves, and always have been, so it was to be expected.

I was at a Suicide Silence show (not really my thing, but you know what they say about gift horses and whatnot) and they actually did play an encore, and a Deftones cover at that. Easily the best song of the night.

Also, as I mentioned in a concert review post I made a year or two ago, Tool is responsible for the most pretentious non-encore I've ever witnessed. I still love their music, but I'm pretty thoroughly convinced from their antics that evening that they aren't 'humble' dudes by any stretch of the imagination.

Before 'leaving' the stage, they put down all their instruments and stood at the front of the stage, completely still, arms folded, drenched in flood lights. They just stood there, motionless, for 3-5 minutes, before leaving the stage for a couple of minutes, only to come back and play Vicarious, or some such. Super, super lame.

I tend to dislike when bands do that, as it's cleary noticable the encore was pre-determined and part of the set list.

My band has been asked for and encore about twice, and not the
"drunk friend of the band screaming hysterically" encore, but the audience yelling and chanting "one more song!" as we are taking our stuff down.

It would be awesome if that came back to live shows and not be a predetermined part of the set.

Damn. When I saw them a few years ago it was song after song after song without a break. Sucks if they've bought in to the whole encore shebang.

They've always done them here and there, from what I know. But it's not the typical "it's expected every time".

And YES, their shows are unrelenting. They play song after song after song. You get your monies worth for sure.

....! Now I'm even MORE pissed that I missed that show.

Oh, and Abnormality had a show once where we got such a crowd reception that we felt obliged for an encore (We had already shut off our amps)...and we ended up playing a song that wasn't even fully written yet.

Yeah warrel from nevermore always clowns encore performances on stage. He will say stuff along the lines of "This is the part where we pretend to leave and hide backstage and blahblahblah HERE IS THE LAST SONG" to avoid being ingenuine.

I really think encores shouldn't be abolished, but there should be a new way of going about them at least.

The only time I have been surprised by an encore was when Mountain opened for Joe Satriani (satchafunkilicus tour) Leslie West and Satriani were playing duets, Jeff Becks Going Down most notably. Now that, was cool.

IIRC at the show I was at, Devin said something about going to take a shit and then play more songs.
