John Sykes certainly hit a peak on that album, staggering player......Adrian Vandenberg really wasn't in the same league (although a terrific songwriter in his own right) and even Slip of the Tongue featuring Mr vai didn't quite evoke that same feeling as John's tumultuous riffs, to say nothing of his awe-inspiring shredding and tone.
Cheese, but with playing that good I can forgive it quite a lot

with ShadeyDavey about John Sykes. Even if Vai doesn't get as much recognition as Sykes in this band, I absolutely love the solo he did for Fool For Your Loving.

John Sykes rules faces... Doug Aldrich rules... Reb Beach rules... I could take or leave Vai in this band... either way they've had probably some of the greatest guitar lineups ever. Still of the night solo is one of my all time favs.

You just HAVE to love Whitesnake! There were always GREAT musicians in the band and they wrote/write amazing songs. Sure it's a bit cheesey, but it certainly isn't Cheesewiz - we're talking prime brie here!

![]() Mesa Boogie Coliseum heads and a smattering of effects - I read somewhere that he ran the heads so hot that he killed a set of tube in 6 weeks but with tone like that.......has to be worth it! Cheese tastic to the max but you have to love Whitesnake even if its only for Sykes playing on 1987! Probably one of the very few albums where the riffs, solo's, tone, swagger fcuking everything about the guitar playing is perfection imo.... He fcuking rips so hard that even with Vai doing the business on Slip... (which I think has actually aged very well and is better 20 yrs later than it was when it come out) it still was a poor relation to 1987. Totally loved Good to Be Bad he has a killer guitar duo in Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach, their playing on Live in the Shadow of the Blues is incredible, especially on Still of the Night....
Def one my all time favourite albums 1987 and how can you not love the videos! haha! Spotter badge note btw check out the bit in Is this Love where Tawyne pulls her knickers out of her ar$e! LOL!! (go to 2.46 on the you tube vid!! I would happily have helped her out with that...!! haha!) Interesting interview with Coverdale on UG where he talks about Sykes and Campbell and does spell out why he let Vivian go.... David Coverdale: 'I Didn't Want To Be Part Of Ripping Of The Purple Fabric' | Interviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com Always been amazing guitarists in Whitesnake.... always thought it was a shame Warren DiMartini didn't play with them for that long, woudl love to have heard a Snake album with him.... Also I really love the Starkers in Tokyo cd too well worth getting, all acoustic versions with just Coverdale and Vandenberg, brilliant version of Solider of Fortune & Sailing Ships. Def Looking forward to the new album, so much so I am going out lunch time to get the Classic Rock Special on them with the free sample CD of the new sh1t! LOL! Awesome Thread!

1987 and Slip of the Tongue are two of my favourite rock albums. The cheese doesn't even bother me. I just see it as some serious songs and some silly songs and appreciate them for what they are. Sailing Ships is particularly amazing.

The 1987 album is basically the best guitar tone ever. Sykes work on Blue Murder afterward is close, but doesn't quite match up without DC on vox.
I also thought Good To Be Bad was a very good release, shame it got nearly zero attention from anyone. |

Slip of the Tongue is one of my all time favorites, but man, how on earth did Coverdale allow his last sung note of the album go to print? His last scream on Sailing Ships turns into an f'd up gurgle. WTF. Anybody ever notice that?

What's cheesy about Whitesnake music?
Can't understand what could be cheesy about Whitesnake??
Their music has always been ballsy, bluesy rock or hard rock. I must be missing something here.

Oh, okay I get it. Guess I never really pay attention to the lyrics. The guitar work always seemed to grab my attention, love playing that stuff.

well, i remember this person i was dating at the time telling me that they sounded like zepplin. she liked them. it was the still of the night video. and i gave it a chance and of course i fell in love with it at the solo and outro. amazing guitar playing.
then i found out somehow that was vivian campbell in the video. and that confused me. he looked like he was playing the big scale thing. but that was sykes. sykes and his picking... man, that was intimidating. and the tone. and the vibrato. what a monster. i saw them live with vivian. great show. i'm saving this for when i drop a little weight and have to look beyond awesome:

it sucks. i can't find any live stuff with coverdale and sykes. i guess he left after recording the album. here's a live version with him singing, but he doesn't have the depth of coverdale:

Boogie MIII Coliseum...YEA BABY! Sykes had some sick tones back then. Makes me feel good to a proud owner of some of those amps.
