^I found The Ichthyologist the other day when I was in Louisville, it's an awesome album. I do think that I like their older material a little more overall, but it's all been pretty sweet so far.

yeah the vocalist on Ichthyologist reminds me a bit of tom waits i like the style of the instrumentation but i dont like the tom wait style vocals

My favorite song off of Ichthyologist is La Brea Tar Pits

Strange, "tiny radio" sound on this vid that isn't on the album, but still a great song.

I can't believe someone else other than me listens to them! I heard Neonate back in 2006 and fell in love. SSO needs more Giant Squid love, for sure.

i've tried and tried and tried to like this band... but i just can't. i think it's the vocals, i dunno. there's something there i don't get along with.

I can understand that, the singing is pretty varied though. Are there any specific parts you can think of that don't sit well with you (like, the heavier vocals, the singing in the beginning of neonate, the whispery Waitsian vocals on Dead Man Slough...)?

I love all of them.

The way he sings in Neonate, La Brea Tar Pits, and Sevengill especially. It's different than most singing you hear. I'm afraid I'll probably end up emulating it to some degree.

this is by far one of my favorite bands. i post these guys up on here wheenver someone asks for new music to listen to, but it just doesn't seem to catch on

the ichthyologist is one of the best albums in recent memory.

well, i have the metridium fields and monster in the creek albums. honestly, i just put it on random to remember what it was that i didn't like, haha. and it's pretty much the vocals in general. it's just not my thing, too whiny, nasally. like serj from soad, but not in a good way. i actually don't mind the female vocalist at times, but at others, i cringe. and i don't like the keyboard/organ they have going on sometimes. but the music is pretty damn good, and i remember liking that part of it. it's just the vocals and keyboard that kill it for me, everything else is cool.

Yeah, I can see why people wouldn't dig it. I actually saw a live video, and I wasn't crazy about it there, but on record it sounds great.
