![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Solos?! Hey, I was listening to Bolt Thrower's album, "War Master" and I thought there were a lot of cool riffs, but the solos are what I like to refer to as "Kerry King solos." I don't mean that as a compliment since I consider Kerry King to be the worst soloist in the world (along with the other guitarist for Slayer, Hannemann, or whatever his name is). I cringe every time I hear one of those super fast sloppy random-sounding "solos" with the occasional bending squeals and tremolo bar masturbation where EVERY solo sounds exactly the same regardless of the feel of the song itself. Can anyone tell me why some bands do the "Kerry King solo"? Do they think it sounds good? Do they think anyone likes it? (Yeah, I know a lot of Slayer fans like it. I like a lot of Slayer songs, but I wish they would just cut out the solos half the time). I was in a band where I got the lead player to just improvise a solo over what I was playing for a song and he had no idea what to play so he shredded over it as fast as he could and I was like "No... no Kerry King solos... that sounds like shit." And he just laughed, "Yeah. I had no idea what to play." If your solos sound like shit, why solo? Opinions? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Simple. Because it's better than NOT soloing. ![]() Cannibal Corpse does some random, Kerry King-esque solos, that I think sound bad ass. It's all taste. Whereas you don't like it, I personally do. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Such solos shouldn't be associated with Kerry King as there are plenty of guitarists who do the "whammy a bunch of chromatics to death" solo quite well; check out Possessed's Death Metal, Autopsy's Severed Survival and... well, pretty much any prototypical late-80s thrash/death album for examples of that type of solo done... well, not tastefully, but well. |

1) It's better not to solo than to play a shitty solo. It's all about doing whats best for the music. Less is more sometimes. 2) Cannibal Corpse's solos are tasteful I think, theyre not random and often if there is some wankery going on, it's more to create a certain texture than to just show off and wank. Kerry King = the worst. Kirk Hammett and Zakk not to close behind tho IMO ![]() | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ^^You'd lump Zakk with those two? I'm by no means a huge fan of Zakk but he seems quite inoffensive. To me his leads are melodic, catchy and unashamedly betray his influences. They're rarely surprising or innovative but they get the job done... Hammet/King on the other hand, blargh. While I'm at it, Jeff Hanneman is a pretty decent lead guitarist as well. I love the leads he plays in "Mandatory Suicide" and "Seasons In The Abyss" and his other leads are usually several shades less pointless than those of King. |
