I dont care much for slayer type solos, You can be brutal and heavey, and still have good melodic solos, nevermore or necrophgist for example.

I dont like the random note with whammy bar solo.

the new deicide album is a great example of this.. its very brutal but the leads are incredibly melodic.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Yeah, I don't really buy the argument that some people say that the "Kerry King" solo fits the music and a "melodic solo" wouldn't. I write a lot of very chaotic music with lots of half-steps and flatted fifths, but the leads I write over top of it are melodic and fit very well. Sure, I use discordance and a lot of the same notes being played by the rhythm guitar, but it's still melodic and fits perfectly. Like Ken just said, you can be melodic, brutal, and chaotic at the same time.

true, though, there's some times where a couple of whammy dives or massive 4 note pullbacks on a whammy bar just sound awesome ;D

What's the point of a floyd if you don't do this stuff?

Sometimes it's fun to go apeshit with the trem, a whammy pedal, and some other effects all going at once.

The trick is that the rest of the solo can't sound like a modem dialing up.

Yes, but I think that, with the random messy solo before it and after it, you can ruin any effect of coolness the whammy bar might have. One of my favorite screwing-around-with-a-whammy-bar in a solo would be the solo in X Japan's Scars where at the end, he's just screwing around with the whammy bar, jerking it around, but after a really cool melodic solo.

i like the bar wank that Forbidden did in that song Through Eyes of Glass, it sounded really cool in the context of the song. \m/

Course, there was lots of badass riffing and a couple of cool solos and stuff in there to go with it lol
