Kayo Dot (avant-garde rock...ish)
It took a long time for this band to 'click' for me, but since they did, I absolutely love them. Their stuff is just so...odd.
![]() This one's probably my favorite Kayo Dot song (split into two parts): I'm still working on getting into maudlin of the Well, but I think that'll take more time. Except for Part the Second, which I already love because it sounds like Kayo Dot.

haha I guess it depends. I started with motW, and metalheads will probably get into them easier, because it's doom metal at the core, albeit weird with lots of different influences and strange tangents. "My Fruit..." is a little harder to get into because of the sub-par production, but Bath/LYBM are masterpieces that I can literally listen to any day of the week, and about ten years after their release, I still love those albums to death.
I fell in love with Choirs as soon as I heard it when it came out, all the other ones took me a lot more time to digest, but it is very rewarding, because once you get into the albums, they really are all amazing and their own entities. Choirs is easiest to get into because it flirts most with that post-rock vibe of starting off quiet and ending in a huge wave of awesomeness, the other ones don't really have any of that formula per se but can get just as epic. One thing is for sure, there is no other band that sounds anything like them. another great thing about them is that they choose different types of instrumentation to feature on each album. Sometimes it's more guitar heavy, other times its not, sometimes the violin is key, sometimes its woodwinds and brass instruments. On the last album, for example, there is hardly any, if any guitar at all, Toby is mostly playing bass. |

A few motw songs still hold up. I thought he lost it with Kayo Dot, reeling it back in a little bit for Part the Second but apparently he has a problem with metal now. Part the Second is a bizarre anti-metal statement. The band didn't gain all those fans because it was all pretty and smart and avant garde. It was because they rocked.

maybe it's because he doesn't want to make metal music? As creative as metal bands can get, it has a restrictive form, if you want your band to be called a "metal band." There are zero limitations on where Kayo Dot choose to go, there are still some pretty metal moments.
As far as I know dude loves King Diamond still and bands like Esoteric. This song is pretty ....ing metal imo. I don't think he's trying to be an elitist avant dude, he studied in college under a pretty well-known avant composer, he's worked with John Zorn, even his pre-maudlin home record joke bands like Spoonion were pretty out-there. They sounded like a really weird version of Ween. You make it sound like he's some old metal dude who abandoned the scene in order to .... intellectual hipster chicks on twitter. |

maudlin of the Well was in no way restricted by metal. I've heard quite a few avant garde artsy bands like Kayo Dot (and I'm not saying Kayo Dot is bad), but I've only heard one band like motw.

You should check out Greg Massi's current band Baliset, as well. Here's the intro track to their CD:

I'm listening to this band quite a lot these days. I got into them via Ehnahre and Maudlin of the Well via Kayo Dot.
You have one of the best tastes on ss.org, Ry Z

thumbs up on this thread, i dig everything off 'choirs of the eye' and the split with bloody panda. seen them live two years back and it was mindblowing, really. also, mia matsumiya is the most beautiful person in the world, so that show was fulfilling in many ways, haha.

And most important~~ They're original... I don't think they sound like any other bands at all...

been listening to Kayo Dot/maudlin of the Well for about 5-6 years now. started with Kayo Dot and didn't really get it. maudlin of the well made much more sense to me and then after some years kayo dot clicked. by far the most rewarding musical experience i've ever had.

anyway, kayo dot most definitely has metal elements. if anything, a lot of the chaotic parts on their albums are more intense than any metal i've ever heard. |

I got into this band / maudlin via some friends of mine that like very obscure, off-the-wall music. Very haunting sounds, sometimes heavenly, but it takes a special kind of person for any of it to click. Awesome band regardless, and a great conversation piece for someone who says they like "weird" music.

They are awesome! Tartal lamb is worth checking out as well
One thing I'd like to add.. I've seen them 3 times live and I got to say that they are very impressive live musicians. They pull everything off perfectly and make it look effortless. And they play the music in a more dynamic way, which is really cool. I've attended lots of great shows before, but they are on another level in my opinion |
