Please explain to me how they are already in the studio but they STILL haven't revealed who the drummer is. And why.

While Marco Minnimen is a fantastic drummer and very classically trained and has experience with tech death, for some reason I dont feel like he would be a MASSIVE Dream Theater fan, who knows the technicalities of every single song in their catalog. But then again who knows, its all shady.

Marco is one of those freakishly talented, brainy drummers drummer guys. He can probably learn the entire DT catalogue in three days.

That's why I don't like him for the job, I'd rather have a show-off, stick twirling, rock drummer than a prodigy like him.

I'd rather have someone like Mike Mangini step in, who is a great showman like Portnoy and plays in a way that normal people respond to.

9 out of 10 non-drummers will watch a Minneman drum solo and find it boring even though it's techincally amazing and very unique.

I think it would be fair to say we'll have to see exactly how he plays in Dream Theater (assuming he got the gig) before we say how boring it sounds. Being technically proficient doesn't mean everything you ever play is all of a sudden boring and tasteless.

But I'm with you on wanting more of a showman of a drummer like Mangini. Portnoy always put on a great performance beyond just playing the drums and that's going to be the difficult thing to replace.

Well, the rumors are mostly going on the fact that

A) There's that video floating around of him playing with Rudess after some event
B) He's really good and could learn their discography in a matter of weeks as well as having a style that would fit well in the band

There's nothing that would really suggest he was asked to audition/was accepted other than that. Mangini canceling all his lessons for the next year is very interesting though.

Of course, there's a chance that someone else that nobody expected will be announce and everyone's heads will explode

True indeed.
Personally I looked up a vid of Marco and I thought it was ok I guess. It was very interesting sounding. So is there any video where he really shows his skills?

IMO this is the one most indicative of how he plays:

Not really the most technical stuff he's ever done, but it's really creative, has some very impressive chops applied in a very musical way and he just has a highly unique style in general.

I like the video of him with Roddy (who is also a fantastic drummer) and The Police tribute thing also.

Mangini canceled all his lessons?! That would be unreal, though I've gotta say I'm pretty blown away by Marco.

Is anyone else hoping for a bit of a musical rebirth from these guys? I know it might be blasphemy for a lot (maybe most) DT fans, but the last couple of albums all felt a little stale to me despite some very good material. MP might be a genius, but his insistence to sing on damn near every track sure left me cold...
