I went to the Korn / Deftones / Stone Sour show last week...

... and it was actually pretty good.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't have gone to the show if a friend of mine hadn't given me a ticket for free, but I'm glad I did. There were some interesting opening bands, particularly Flyleaf, which strongly reminded me of The Gathering. They're a nice rock band with some solid playing & an interesting Alanis Morissette type of singer. At least that's what I picked up from hearing them live, she might sound completely different on CD.

The real highlight of the show for me was Stone Sour. Goddamn, they're a great hard rock band. I'd heard some of their stuff before, but compared to the other bands they played with on this tour, they blew them all away. It's too bad they weren't headlining. Corey Taylor's vocals for Stone Sour were dead on all night, and his use of compression, delay & reverb on his vocals are IMO at an expert level. It sounded like there were 3 of him onstage. When the singer did "Bother" solo with no one else on stage and only with a cleantone guitar, it was absolutely beautiful. And I've seen moments like that backfire. I remember back in 1996 helping boo Chris Cornell off the stage when he tried to do "Black Hole Sun" by himself, absolutely hammered & singing off key.

Speaking of singing off key, what in the world are the Deftones doing on tour? I'm going to leave it at that. It felt like amateur night.

Ok, as for Korn, I was actually impressed. I haven't been a fan of their music much since their first disc (and at the time, I think I was just enamored with their UV7PWHs they played live), and I wasn't expecting much. Their live show was a bit of a freakshow, but it was definitely entertaining. Two drummers, a keytarist, a bunch of guys walking around and above the huge stage wearing wolf masks, etc. I was actually really impressed with their live sound & Jonathan Davis' singing. I've never been a fan of his singing, but he definitely sounds like a tour veteran now. His little touches he puts on his vocal lines are tight & defined, and he really exudes the attitude of their music live through his performance. The guitar sound was tight as nails too. Definitely Ibanez/Mesa combination or some similiarly crushing type of amp sound. I don't care which genre of hard rock you're playing, you can't go wrong with Ibanez 7-strings.

Anyway, good show, not necessarily great, but I'm glad I went. I'll definitely be seeing Stone Sour again on tour, they were an absolute rush while up on stage, and that's saying a lot for a band you really can't mosh to. Some bands just have a certain something that makes them better IMO.

Sounds like a cool show. I like some of the Deftones music, sucks to hear about their poor live performance, though.

RIP MIKE

Coolness. I would possibly go to a show like that, just to hear some old Korn. maybe. It's not quite the same since Head left. Deftones and Stone Sour, eh. Glad you enjoyed SS, though, Vin.

I'd like to go to a show like that. I really like Corey Taylor's vocals. In fact, I've always thought that his vocals were the best part of Slipknot, even when a lot of the other parts of the band were weak. I had actually seen Stone Sour with just Corey Taylor playing guitar\singing "Bother" live on youtube before and it was pretty cool.

I liked Deftones era "White Pony." Sometimes Chino Moreno's voice can be a little weird, even off-key, but I usually like them.

As for Korn, I really liked their debut album and their are a lot songs off their their other albums up to 2000 that I liked. One thing that really suprised me about most of their lives (that I've only seen on DVDs and bootlegs) is Jonathan Davis' vocals, since it seemed to really fit the music and oftentimes sounded exactly liked the albums.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself.

i'm going to see the show next friday. i'm not suprised you didn't like the deftones set. they're one of the worst live bands i've ever seen.... and i used to love them, but their live sound is just awful.

Stone sour are frigin insane live, i've got heaps of their live stuff downloaded, they're coming to australia soon so i'll definatly be going too that. I have heard lots of good stuff about them live, and corey taylor is almost perfect live with his vocals, and the guitarists are pretty cool too. Saw Korn about 3 monthes ago, they were brilliant, as you'd expect after touring for like 12 years lol. People can bag them, but live, they're right up there as one of the most entertaining bands too see live. I am hoping to get tickets for the tool concert tomorrow!! god help me! Soulfly and megadeth are coming here too lol. Ahh Your story about seeing stone sour and all that has pumped me up i want them to come now! glad you had an awsome time!

it feels a bit empty without head up there, but you forget that after the first song lol. Rob does a mad job filling in, and the whole percussion thing they have going really adds alot to the music, they even use percussion on their older songs to spice em up abit. They're touring all over america for family values with stone sour and deftones. So go see them if you get the chance, Just for stone sour and korn, you won't regret it
