![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Influential Licks and Riffs... OK so I neeed a little help here, my head just isn't what it used to be. I have decided to, after all of my years of fucking around on guitar, to finally learn covers...what the hell. I want to start with the influential boys first, guys like Hendrix, Knopfler, Gilmour, EVH...etc. So chip in guys, post which guitarist songs, or licks I should learn to better my self on the guitar. Theres no need to jump into the shred stuff, at this time, I want to learn the basic licks that have paved the way. I know it sounds silly, and I know I have expressed my thoughts before, being always opposed to learning 'other peoples stuff', but I realize now that I may have missed out. Really though, when I started playing guitar it was for one purpose only, and that was an outlet for me to express myself and release shit that was built up inside. I never wanted to work at it, just more or less fuck around and enjoy...but lately with feelings of wanting to join a band, and even pursuing writing material, I think one needs the foundation...so lay it on me...and I know, I'm a knuckle head... Oh, also let me know what methods you guys use to learn songs and some type of time frame (kind of a stupid question though)... "and we'll also be establishing, beyond all scientific doubt, that ANY note can be made to sound good over ANY chord, so long as you put it in the right place!" Guthrie Govan |

Like the second solo in Mr Crowley... the Crazy Train solo has some cool licks.. Revelation(Mother Earth) has an AMAZING outro instrumental section.. Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high, Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie, Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally. Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread Its branches like a Temple overhead. ~Charles Baudelaire http://www.myspace.com/impurity Brutal Skullfucking Death Metal |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | OK I should mention that my main intention is full songs, however suggestions like Metal Ken's will also be much appreciated... Funny, one of the few covers I did learn was Crazy Train... |

Depends on a number of things. are you figuring it out or reading a tab? IF you're figuring it out, work at your own pace. it also might help to get some software that can adjust the speed of the music while keeping the pitch constant (like TRanscribe! or something.) If you're working from a tab or sheet music, then set some kind of realistic goal. Also, break it into sections, and master them. If its like, a classical piece, break it into a set number of chunks and work on each one for a period of time until you have it down and move to the next. Depending on the song is what i depend my 'learning the song' method. if its classical, i find the real original version and work it out on guitar. if its a song, i'll try to figure it out, but if i'm feeling lazy or whatever, i might try to find a tab.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Uhh...I dunno about this being a riff that paved the way but...I've always felt the opening riff to "Holy Wars" was pretty recognizeable and well known" Hell, I recognized that riff from when I was little and had no clue who Megadeth was. |

As far as methods go, I would get guitar pro. I know mysongbook went down but there is a new guitar pro site with their entire archive + called http://www.gprotab.net/. This is unless of course you want to transcribe by yourself for some ear training which by all means would better anyone as a musician.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I just got guitar pro, it's awesome. I don't think I can learn a song without the aid of tabs...in fact I find it difficult with tabs, perhaps because I have been ignorant for so long. |
