I hang my guitar around the same height, and used to play even higher. I studied classical for about a year and that's also what changed my positioning, both standing and while sitting. It feels more comfortable than the 'traditional' positions to me.

Yes its completely wrong and you should feel bad

Me:

Now that is how you wear a guitar!

Srsly though wear it how its comfortable and tell everyone else to .... off. Only idiots will tell you your guitar has to be anything other than whats comfortable to you.

Ironically enough the same show that that picture was taken some kid kept nagging the shit out of me for the 5 minutes I was setting up demanding I put my guitar lower, and then proceeded to shut the .... up the second I started playing (I noodled to make sure the volume levels were ok)

Ah..it's so nice to put a face to the failure

But seriously..yeah..I agree with the post. It makes 0 sense to let others dictate how you should be comfortable.

What kind of strap is that? I can never get mine to sit that high even though that's exactly where I would want it to be.

Its not the strap that lets me do it (its a skull and bones satriani strap) its the what I do to it that lets me sit it that high.

I actually leave some slack in the strap and fold it over then tape up the end to get it to go that high. No strap ever gets that high on a skinny bastard like me without doing this.

@Drak: The only fail I see is the guy who quoted an entire picture on the same page wasting up forum space.

Its not about beeing a poser, or trying just to look cool. In my honest opinion its all about where you are most comfortable having your guitar. Myself, I have it rather low. Around my waist area, check link for picture:

Not to mention I think wearing the guitar as a neck tie just looks stupid on me and it annoys the hell out of me to see other people do it, but if it works for them then my opinion is obviously invalid. There is no right or wrong way if it works for you.

dude, i play my guitar in different positions depending on what i'm playing.
for my stOrk stuff, i'm tom morello....
for my schwarzenator stuff, i'm joe blow....
for that other thing i was doing.... i kept that shit low.

you need to think of the audience you are playing for..... some people want to see a totally great lookin dood being hip..... others want to see a technical magician.....
in general, it's whatever to me.

Dude, just play it whereever it makes you feel comfortable for YOU.
Pretty similar to how you would write music for YOU.
In summary, .... people.

Btw, another person who played the guitar very well swung low was Dimebag from Pantera but you would also see him change stance while playing when it came to solos. I guess you could go that route also?

I rock my guitar at an angle and at my chest; the nut is usually on the same plane as the top of my shoulders. It looks extra funny on me because I'm a rather large fella (6'3", 240lbs.). You gonna make fun of me???

I believe Devin Townsend put it best when he said that you could either look really cool and play with your guitar slung super low or actually be able to play well with it up high. Personally I go for the higher approach as I like to have proper technique.

This is the lowest I have ever worn a guitar; we were playing AC/DC covers (notice I'm playing a G-chord). I had to try and look cool.

Dude I love that strap, sooooo comfortable. I play the guitar slightly higher than petrucci usually, and angle the guitar around depending on what I'm playing.

I keep my guitar somewhere in between petrucci and morello level. Makes playing easier, and I pretty much have to cause my wrists have been fragile since I recovered from the carpal tunnel I had four years ago.

Playing well, comfortably, and preventing RSI >>>>>>>>>>>> wearing your guitar at a certain height cause other people think you should

dude, i wear my guitar a couple inches higher than you. i don't think you should care what people think. if you are truly playing for the sake of playing your best, you should wear your guitar wherever it best facilitates your right and left hand technique.

I find when I play with it higher, my picking hand is able to remain much more relaxed, thus increasing my endurance

Plus, when I wear my guitar high enough, I can show off my package

ahh, i thought you meant that wearing it lower somehow made playing those genre's easier.

but yeah, im of the mindset that playing with it low is 100% for looks and has nothing to do with playability. and if someone has "always played it that low" then they must have gotten it from somewhere...
