What? Playing music is nerdy? I'll show you you little punk!

I was playing counter strike earlier today when some kid between the ages of 12 and 14 (judging by his voice) came into the server and started acting like an ass.

So I got ready to kick him but before I kicked him but then one girl asked him why it is that he dosn't have anything better to do besides pestering people on the internet.

He replied, "It's SUMMER! I DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING AND THERE's NOTHING BETTER TO DO!"

So I replied, "How about you go learn an instrument or draw or something, anything constructive."

To which he burst out into laughter and said "LEARN AN INSTRUMENT? ARE YOU KIDDING THAT'S WHAT NERDS DO AND I'M NOT A NERD!"

To which I replied,"Dude, you're playing COUNTER STRIKE you're not one to talk."

After this I kicked him out of the server.

But it bothered me that he thought learning an instrument was a bad thing.
Just as much as it bothers me that my sister views playing her clarinet as a chore and thinks that she should get allowance for "sticking with it"

I think the blame may be placed on school music teachers. I remember in elementary school our teacher was horrible and everyone hated having to go to her class.

And my orchestra teacher in elementary school didn't teach us anything at all. Half of us couldn't even read the notes. (We would just sorta mime and listen into the kids who took private lessons and knew how to play and then learn by listening to them, which I guess was beneficial to us in a way.)

Virtually everyone who didn't take private lessons in elementary school dropped out after our first year in introductory orchestra in 7th grade because our teacher would constantly remind us of how bad we were and how shocked she was that our knowledge was so lacking. Never the less, I looked forward to concerts because I loved hearing the music we played (even though we probably sounded like complete doo-doo)

Shitty ass school system.

Bah.

Well, consider the source.

Actually, music is very emotive, whereas something purely constructive would be learning how to build a house. But playing video games is just a waste of time. Not that I have anything against wasting your time.

Oh yeah I'm sure he'll grow out of it. It's just that not even 4 years ago when I was 12 did I hear someone make a statement like that.

Personally I consider learning an instrument to be constructive because you continually build on top of things that you have learned until your reach the goal that you have set for yourself. It is of course emotive as well.

Cocky little shit.

I agree, it's sad that children aren't brought up with music like they used to be. There was an article in the UK papers a couple of years ago where a bunch of primary school children were asked to name a single classical composer (just a name, not identifying any music), and about 80% of them couldn't, which is really pathetic. When I was a school most of the people in my classes didn't view music as a chore, it was just an oppotunity to goof off and mess around. There were very few people who genuinely loved to play...they were either pressured into it by (well-intentioned) parents when they were young, or just wanted something else to write on their university applications later on.

You kinda hope that kid will grow up, but frankly I doubt it.

Dreaming in infared...

I was probably the only dude in elementary school who loved music class. Music class ruled.

^That just sums up what I was talking about. Well, at least you got something out of it.
I had a great class in my final two years at school, but that was because it was just me and one other guy, and we had some pretty cool teachers.

...calling music nerdy... while playing CS online... how ironic.

I'd have to say about 75% of people who play games online are complete nerds. I play them online all the time, and I hope I'm a nerd, because I want to make a load of money someday.
