I think that a lot of bands pursue commercial success and end up sucking as a result. At least, that's the only possible excuse that I can imagine for some of these really bad decisions in musical direction:

Megadeth - Youthanasia
Metallica - Black album
Six Feet Under - the CD after Maximum Violence (can't remember the name)

Eh, I'm bored. Can't think of any more at the moment, but the list goes on for a long, long time.

The thing about Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings is that I think the more mainstream sound of those albums kept Megadeth in the charts during the '90s long after most of their contemporaries. I also happen to like both of those albums, though I won't say they compare well to Rust In Peace or Peace Sells. To me, Countdown to Extinction was also more commercially driven as compared to Rust.
