Looking for acoustic music recommendations

A bit of backstory: Thanks to the anonymity of the interwebs, I don't mind telling you folks that the wife recently found out we're expecting a child (while I'm currently unemployed [whoops], wasn't an accident, kind of a "if we're supposed to have a child now, then we'll have one" type of deal). While in the car yesterday, I was just thinking about how if the pregnancy takes and we end up with an actual baby (she's a month in, it's considered "safe" after the first trimester [first three months], and that's when you're supposed to tell everybody, just some baby knowledge for all y'all) then I want to be able to play and sing songs to the child right out of the gate, which means I'm going to be focusing less on the meedly mee stuff and more on acoustic songs that I can play and sing to encourage the child to develop their musical muscles right out of the gate.

So anyway, I like a very specific kind of acoustic music, and I was going to see if you gents could refer me to any music you're aware of in the same vein (even if it's just a track or two by an otherwise non-acoustic artist).

So without further ado, here are some examples of the type of songs I really like on the acoustic and will be using as a practice vehicle to developing my ability to play and sing.

So what am I missing? As always recommendations will be met with thanks!

Bout to throw up a "Cheap acoustics" thread in standard guitar section, so jump over there and weigh in on great cheap acoustics!

EDIT: Starting to look toward acoustic guitars, make me recommendations here:

only guitar stuff? or do you want other instruments?

im guessing only guitar cause thats what you wanna play. Kings of Convenience are ok. I like Beirut from time to time. Devotchka has some nice songs too.

if im going to go acoustic i usually stick to Cello and classical instruments. But thats my two cents. If you want recommendations there check out "Rachel's" and "Colleen"

Funny story. So before my youngest was born I was on a big Andy Mckee kick. Within the first few weeks of her being born we quickly found out that she was definately NOT a fan of car rides. She ....ing hated it. We were on a long car ride the one day and I had had enough with the screming an crying so I threw on my Andy Mckee cd, Africa was the song and within in seconds, I honestly mean seconds she was out like a light. From that day forward, if she couldn't get to sleep at night, or we had to go for a car ride, on came the Andy Mckee and out she went. I found his cover of Africa to be most effective.

Although oddly enough both my kids are now fans of anything metal, I catch them headbanging every now and then

Those should get you started. Maybe pick up a book of classical transcriptions as well?

Thanks for the recommendations guys!

I'd heard that Andy McKee cover of Africa and thought it was incredible. I thought the cover of it by like the 10 year old Asian kid was even more incredible.

The idea is stuff with vocal harmonies over it to work on singing and playing for me. I'll listen to the beautiful technical instrumental stuff all day long.

I completely forgot about Opeth and their acoustic stuff. I'll have to revisit it.

Thanks again guys!

In the vein of Alestorm, one of the most epic folk songs ever, based on a (sort of) true story, and written by Robert Burns. Three chords, I IV V. This version's in A, but I've always played it in G because it suits my range better and I dunno, I like G C and D more than A D and E.

Some came here for to see me hang,
and some to buy my fiddle,
but before that I do part wi' her
I'll brak it o'er the middle.

He's takes the fiddle in bith his hands
And brak it o'er a stane:
"There's no other man's gonna play on her
For I am dead and gane."

While it's more in the "World Music" sense, Karl Sander's solo albums (or at least his latest, Saurian Exorcisms) relies heavily on acoustic guitar to add to the atmosphere and he even does some shredding on it (while still being tasteful)

Oh, and Elvis Costello. This song's just beautiful. The "stop!" during the second verse is spine-tingling to me.

Edit: can't find a good version of it acoustic, so you're stuck with a piano and a jazzbox. Close enough right?

I love Bon Iver. For Emma, Forever Ago has been on constant rotation in my car, house and iPod for the past 2+ years. It just never gets old.

re:stacks is one of my favorite tracks

If you like Bon Iver, I would also recommend Horse Feathers. I just saw them two weeks ago, it was spine-tingling.

Iron and Wine. Simply amazing.

Great Lake Swimmers

City and Colour

Neil Young's got some serious classics that anyone with an acoustic guitar should know how to play

And if you're interested in anything bluesy, I love me some Keb' Mo'
