Dude, Death Angel's 'Seemingly Endless Time', single handedly got me into metal. Amazingy, they still kick ass.

How about Suicidal Tendencies, Sanctuary (before Nevermore, whom I think you guys might have heard of), old Sepultura, or Anacrusis who were way ahead of the game when it came to prog-extreme metal fusion.

Quote:
And they'll also be saying, "Yeah yeah old man, nobody cares."
When we try and tell the younger generation of the golden metal yester years. Man, I'm feeling old....
Nah, metalheads respect their roots, like jazz guys that way. One of the first things I ever did when I got into metal was go back and buy Sabbath and Maiden albums.

Absolutely. I had the demo, then the Bootcamp EP, (which I bought on CD when they reissued it), and both "The Madness Begins" and "Absolute Power". AP is still one of my favorite thrash CDs. Joel has popped up here before, actually.

Not most of them, sadly. The musicians tend to, but not so much the average fan.

I guess. I don't conciser fans to be metalheads, just like guys who don't do anything but watch ESPN and wear teamwear aren't really jocks. Those who do, are... or something like that.

So far no one has mentioned them (youtube vids dont show up on this phone for some reason)
so here we are:

Possessed - The Seven Churches
This album was a thrash metal album that helped found death metal and kicked a lot of ass.

And props to whoever mentioned Cyclone Temple. They sound like Metallica during the AJFA period and earlier. A very cool band indeed!
I dig the track Me, Myself, and I

crazy how many bands that were mentioned that i know little or nothing about - i only thought i was well versed in thrash. there was alot of tape trading back then & i had a sizeble collection too.

well this has opened up a whole new research project for me....gotta see what i've missed over the years! i bet i find alot of new (old stock) metal to love.

I always thought Cliff getting killed instead of Lars was like John Lennon getting killed instead of Yoko - MJS

how many guitars are enough? ...just one or two more!

+1 for those that said Possessed and Dark Angel's Darkness Descends. Pleasure To Kill from Kreator was an album that put them on the map. DRI and The Accused were more hardcore but if you liked thrash you liked those guys. Bands like Exciter helped pave the way for heavier bands but were not really thrash per se. Exodus made a huge splash with Bonded by Blood.

But really, no one mentions VENOM? And dont say that is black metal because that didnt really exist back then. I dont know how Venom is left out of the big 4 conversations because ALL of those guys were heavily influenced by Venom. Their first 4 albums are epic and still hold up pretty well today.

That was a GREAT time to be into heavy music. Especially in the Bay Area

Heh. That's hilarious revisionism in so many ways - it's a thrash song by the major populizers of the style, and it really predates Death Metal as a style.

That should start an argument, but I have the benefit of having been in the underground scene at the time.

Testament definitely takes the gold for me:

Chuck's voice is absolutely versatile and I love Alex Skolnik.

I was but a toddler during this era, but after I got into metal in high school I had a period of time where I did a lot of catching up on old school thrash. All the bands that I've listened to: Metallica, Exodus, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Death Angel, Kreator, etc. They never struck me as badass as Testament. I feel like they took the genre and said, "This is how you do it." Obviously, my opinion.

Maybe I'm a fanboy but Chuck's voice is all I'd ever want in a metal vocalist.

Also, and I may get flamed for this, but I never really could get into Slayer. Sorry.

Last Christmas My Wife bought me a book called "Choosing Death",,,,it is a book about the beginnings on Death Metal. The weirdest thing is,,I REMEMBER ALOT of it when it was actually going on!! I remember back in 1989 Hooking my Little Yamaha 15 watt amp to a sealed speaker enclosure and scooping the mids to get that "M.O.P./"AJFA" sound in my bedroom,,,Ohh Even to this day I STILL Love that sound. Back then I bought a cassette of Death's "Spiritual Healing" and I think there was one song I liked,,the rest of it was just WAYYY Too melodic for my Raging Testosterone!!!

I have their album on LP. Did they do more than one?

I wasn't a huge fan.
