King's X - Ogre Tones

God this CD is too damn good. Why King's X isn't huge is totally beyond me.

Ty Tabor has godly tone. If there is anyone's tone I would love to have it's his. He is one of my favorite players ever.

Every album since "Welcome Home...Mr. Bulbous" has been a POD, straight to tape.

I've always liked King's X, one of greatest trios ever, I heard they were awesome live too.

I'll have to check out their latest.

I didn't know he was using them in the studio now, but I've seen them since they got the Randall endorsement. Doug still had his Ampeg SVT and Triple rec hidden in the back, but Ty was actually using the Randall stuff. It sounded horrible compared to the PODxt Pro->Mesa 2:90->Mesa cabs rig he had been using for the past few years.

I haven't heard them live in a while. So maybe he has lost something on his live tone. That would suck.

Was he playing one of those Les Paul-like Yamahas? I can imagine that a guitar made of mostly maple compared to his older basswood strats would alter his tome a lot to. I always have a had a jones to get one of his Drop-6 Yamahas with the longer scale length for playing tuned to drop C or C standard.

Honestly, this was his first tour with the new amp rig, so maybe he just hadn't nailed his sound yet. I thought it actually sounded better for the lower tuned stuff (Bulbous is all in drop-A), but crappy for the drop-D stuff. He was still playing his RGX-TT, which is not all basswood: it is a wide maple center that the bridge, pickups, and neck are mounted to, with basswood wings, so he is really getting the lion's share of his tone from the maple. I haven't seen them yet since he's been playing the AES guitars.
