I find it interesting that the Nomad 55 doens't have the normal/extreme power amp voicing. No matter how hard i tried, i just could not get a tight high-gain sound out of the 55. Maybe the 6L6 power section just isn't as well suited to the gain structure of the Nomad as the EL-84s.

Good point, Leon - I've got a meeting in ten minutes, but in short...
High Gain JJ's Mesa tubes are apparently pretty gain-y to begin with, so there wasn't a HUGE gain boost. What I did see, though, was an overall more musical gain range - I found I needed less gain (by my ears, not knob settings) to get a full, rich tone, and in particular the lower-gain tones were warmer. A lot of this could have been due to the balanced phase inverter tube, too, but while the change was subtle, it was quite nice. Part of this was no doubt due to the new power tubes, as well. Low Gain JJ's I bought a "blues" set too, or rather just the tubes that varied between the high gain and the low gain set. Again, you lost some gain, but not like night ad day. The overall tone became edgier, though, and a little crunchier, and I found I actually preferred the high gain tubes at lower gain settings to the low gain ones. I still have 'em, maybe I should toss them back in just for kicks. |

IIRC, the first tube is shared amongst all channels, and the next two are shared between 2-3 and cascade off the previous one, and all tonal differences are due to circuitry and not tubes at that point - as such, any tube change to V2 would impact 3 as well as 2.
I'll go find the tube chart to be sure though. ![]() UPDATE - no dice. V1 A/B (paralleled) Input stage V2 A 2nd stage channel 1 V2 B 3rd stage channel 1 V3 A 4th stage 2&3 V3 B 3rd stage 2&3 V4 A 2nd stage 2&3 V4 B FX return stage V5 A&B Phase inverter. It's strange that the gain response varies so much from one channel to the next, considering they run through the same gain stages - total gain does seem about the same (i.e - ....in' HIGH), but the taper is a little more gradual in 3, I think. |

Yea, it still sounds amazing at low volumes...but as it gets louder the tone opens up and just gets real tight...I prefer it loud, but most tube guru's do.

lately in my funk band, i've been using the 2nd channel quite a bit. here's how i've been running it...
gain: 3~4 master: 4 presence: 7~8 treble: 5 mid: 4 bass: 5 with a splash of reverb from my G-Major, i'll crank this channel to get that clean-but-dirty sound that i haven't really been able to find yet until now. i've had this amp for a bit over two years now, and i'm still finding new sounds buried in it! |

vintage. i've found that while the other two channels are pretty much good at low volumes, it really takes some juice to get channel 2 to warm up. also try it with your bridge pup's in parallel. that = spanktastic!
cranking the gain down further seems to get me into the high gain range on my channel one. so lately i've pretty much been thinking about my channel two as a higher gain extension of channel 1, rather than a completely different beast. that's what really opened me up to it, since i couldn't really get a good brown-sound out of it (at low volumes, anyways). |
