Bareknuckle Puckups - Nailbomb 7
TheMissing
05-04-2008
I recently sold my Lundgren M7 to fund the purchase of the Nailbomb. The M7 was a nice pickup, but not for me.

BKP Customer support is top notch! I exchanged a few e-mails with Tim discussing my sound, what gear I use, and what I wanted out of a pickup. He recommended the Nailbomb. If you are unfamiliar with Bareknuckle Pickups, then send them an e-mail with what sound you're looking for and your gear and he will give you some well founded suggestions (The man makes these things himself, he knows them through and through!).

On to the sound!

I have this wired up with a push pull pot to split my pickups to get a single coil sound if I want to. The pickups come with 5 wires, and is pre wired for humbucker use, no soldering required!(Well, you still have to solder the wires to the guitar, but you don't have to attach any wires together) So all I had to do was snip the joint off of one and we were ready to go....

I don't know what the nailbomb neck sounds like but the coldsweat?
This is what I think of the coldsweat (in this guitar anyway)

@ the Missing, i'll definitely let you know my thoughts on both the Nailbomb neck model and the Cold Sweat neck. i haven't gotten a chance to try out both of my BKP equipped guitars through my main amp yet, but so far, i'm liking the Cold Sweat neck MUCH better than the Nailbomb neck. the CS just seems alot more interesting and complex. they are very different pickups though. the NB neck has a more traditional P.A.F. like tone, but seemingly ten times hotter. the CS neck has close to the same output, but just feels more responsive to me and has a hint of single coil-like poppiness to it, which doesn't seem to be in the NB necks vocabulary at all. of course that's something you may or may not like.

Cool!

I talked to Tim and he flat out recommended the CS for the neck position, because I told him I was looking for a '59, but with more detail, punch, and clarity. So It looks like i'll be going that route, but your quick review helped some more!

Thanks Ed!

Yeah, i know... i commented on his review as well. The Nailbomb sounds like a pretty amazing pickup, and from Nick's description, almost exactly the kind of tone i like.

I've now got a set of Nailbombs in my Dean, and i'm not totally sold on them yet. The neck pickup is very nice and dynamic... it goes from very clean and warm to almost strat-like "spank" when you really slam the strings. Yet even with the very loud transient spikes, it never pushed my F-30's clean channel into clipping. Very nice. Distorted, i think both pickups work nicely, especially together, but i'm finding the Nailbomb bridge to be a little dense and "woolly" on the bottom end. It could stand to be a bit clearer and more articulate. I've sent Tim an email asking what the optimal distance from the strings should be, as i suspect i don't have it quite dialed in just right yet.

I have a feeling these may not be a good match with this guitar. I'm tempted to put my Jazz-7 and Alnico8-loaded Custom-7 back in the next time i change strings. I think i dug their overall tone a bit better.
