Behringer Truth 2031A Studio Monitors

Behringer Truth 2031A Studio Monitors

I've had these studio monitors now for about 4 years I believe. They get very mixed reviews from glowing reviews to utter trash. I've had these very long so I feel I can provide an honest review. I'm not going to go throwing down the specs cause you can get all that at MusiciansFriend or Behringers website. They currently sell for about $339 for a pair which is a steal! I bought mine when the price had just dropped from $599 to $399. I called to order and when they told me the total I was like, "Wait, did you make a mistake with my order?" and she said no the price just dropped

These monitors offer a good amount of room compensation adjustment switches on the back and they SHOULD BE USED!! When you first take the monitors out of the box, set them up, turn them on, and play something through them the psycho-acoustic effect kicks in and you say DAMN these sound niiiice!!! Then after a while you calm down and start realizing the treble is WAY too damn loud. Soon after I set the high frequency to -2db. Later I still found the hi's a bit too loud and set the switch to -4 and bingo, perfect! Keep in mind I have auralex on my walls so it's odd that the high's would be so loud. I can't imagine how they'd initially sound in a highly reflective room. So I recommend everyone to cut the hi's since I've read the same feedback from many others that they're too bright by default. I don't recall for sure if I adjusted the low frequency compensation but I believe I may have set it for -2db since I have some heavy bass frequencies where I sit and my bass traps do almost nothing (auralex bass traps suck).

I've mixed PLENTY of material though these and I'll gladly PM or e-mail links to download full songs with vocals I created, mixed, and mastered through them (they're industrial/electronic music). I won't post the link here cause they'll show up in Google when people search for the band name. I'm very very satisfied with these monitors. A little over a year back I went out and bought the Mackies cause they're so hyped as being the best, and of course I have to have the best :P, and I was appauled at their sound to be honest. They were just way too bass heavy even went set to maximum compensation and they sounded to me like they had a bit of mid range scoop - even though the plot graph shows them to be flat. Anyhow. I tried working with them for a few days then back they went. I was glad I had my Behringers. As with any studio monitor you have to get used to them! I can't stress this enough. You can take nearly any sound source and mix through it if you're extremely familiar with it. Like if you've been listening to your music for 7 years through the same set of computer speakers you could probably pull off a semi-decent mix through them as you're so familiar with them.

Anyhow, I'd like to dispell a myth here. The Behringers are NOT overly bassy. I don't know how anyone can say this in their reviews. Matter of fact I found the bass to be exactly what's it's supposed to be - ie.flat... neutral, where it's supposed to be. Sure they can be bassy if your tracks are too bassy. That's the point. That being said the Behringers go down to 50hz which is fine but I really did wish they went down to 35hz like the Events or the Mackies though I've never had any problems with them only goning down to 50hz.

Secondly, I'm not doubting others cause I'm sure people have had this problem as many have claimed but I do not get one single bit of radio interference through my monitors. Some claim they have really loud radio transmissions through theirs. Probably a manufacturing screw up in the internal shielding but mine are fine.

So the only negative aspect is the excessive treble and that's easily fixed but adjusting the hi-cut switches accordingly. When something is bad in a mix or a track I can easily spot it with the Behringers. Again, if you're not used to studio monitors and have never really worked with them you will need to take time to get used to them - with any brand! Allow 6 months even, seriously. We're not used to hearing flat response speakers by default. We're used to bass and treble hyped stereo's and headphones so it'll take some time before your mixes come out right. At first your mixes will come out bad if you're not used to studio monitors cause you'll mix to achieve that stereo boombox sound which will wind up giving you TWICE the bass and treble as normal.

Anyhow, I highly recommend these monitors. The only monitors I've personally heard that were superior (by a good margin too) is the Dynaudio BM15a's. Those cost $2600 for a pair and some day I'll have them but that'll be far in the future.

I liked mine to for the two and a half weeks I had them before they asploded. I took it to my tech and he showed me where the circuit board had arched taking out both the power amps for the tweaters at the same time.

My experience with Behringer as a whole has been very similiar. Their stuff is decent sounding and functioning and then bam! it's up in smoke. I had one of their Euromixers for a damn long time and expected it to go any day. I remember being quite happy with the sound of it and it was dirt cheap. Then I upgraded to an Allen & Heath at an admittedly higher price. I was actually shocked at the overall quality and sound difference. Since then, I just save up and avoid the Behringer stuff at all costs.

FWIW, I replaced my Truths with a pair of Samson Resolv's and although they're not much better sound wise, I've been beating them silly for six months and they're clicking along just fine.

Damn that sucks. Sorry to hear about your bad experience with them. Like I said though... I've had mine for around 4 years now and they're still working perfect (knock on wood). Even if they went tomorrow they'd still have been worth the $399 I paid for them. Also, anyone that buys them through MF or Guitar Center can get the extended coverage. Maybe their manufacturing quality has gotten lower hence the even lower price than I paid? Possibly, but mine are excellent.

Yeah, that's the scary thing about using Behringer. It's a total crapshoot. Your monitors are running long and strong. Mine died before the end of the month.

Like I said, I had a Euromixer that worked flawlessly for about four years. I still have a B2 condenser mic in my closet that is actually great. You just never know.
