James' Rig of Doom

Here it is guys:

From top:

AKG 3000 series wireless system
Korg DTR-2000 tuner
Furman PL-8E power conditioner
BBE 362i Sonic Maximizer
Marshall EL84 20/20 power amp
Rocktron Velocity 120 power amp
Marshall 1936 oversize 2x12 cabs

On floor board:

Digitech Whammy
Digitech GNX4

In the picture you can see my old Ibanez Tone Blaster 4x12 and one of my UV1000 cases. Gives you an idea of just how tall this rig is for a pair of 2x12's. Each 2x12 is run from it's own power amp and it sounds fucking immense. Next step is to replace the Velocity with another Marshall 20/20 and then the hunt for a Triaxis starts

Nice rig James!
Are the Marshall 20/20's a nice sounding amp?

I want a stereo valve power-amp to run my Pod XT through and i was thinking of one of those.I reckon it would be plenty powerful enough for what i need as i'm not gigging or anything.
I've got the same 1936 cab as yours and i think they're fantastic cabs.I actually prefer the sound of it to the JCM 4x12" i used to have.

Yep, the 20/20 sounds good. I'm gonna try some JJ tubes in it soon as everyone here seems to rave about them. It's very loud, in fact if it didn't break up at the top end I think I could get away with one, but I have to turn the volume down to keep my cleans clean. The deep switch adds lots of balls to the sound, but running into the 1936 it's just too bassy to use that function.

I've actually stopped using my BBE at the moment. I need to do some tweaking to my sounds to take into account the sonic differences with the 1936 and the valve amp, but it sounds so good right now I don't think I'll be using the BBE again.

Hey James!

I don't know if this will be of any interest to you but there's someone over at the Jemsite classifieds who's looking to swap his Marshall 50/50 valve power-amp for a 20/20 or £250 cash.

I was quite tempted myself !

Time for an update.

My Wireless was making some nasty noises, only audible at rehearsal/gig volumes, not at bedroom levels. I did some messing about with isolation washers as I sounded like a ground loop problem. Still didn't fix it. Took my wireless out of the rack and placed it on top and the problem disappeared. I guess the aerials being on the back was not a good thing in the rack. I must admit I was worried about that when I put it together.

So descision time. Do I sell this wireless and buy another that has front mounted aerials, or just put up with having to set up my wireless each time?

I've also removed the BBE as I've found I no longer need it now I've got a valve amp and better speakers. It may be up for sale here soon, it depends if my friend wants it or not.

Nice rig!

I'd say keep the AKG until you feel it's time to move on. I have the same unit. I think it was great for the money, but it eats batteries like nobody's business. I never had any noise problems with mine, but in certain circumstances, the signal gets weak, so I get a little noise and an output drop unless I stand in the right spot.

On second thought, you might want to just get a new one.

I've never had a problem with it until now, and I've solved the problem for now. I really want it in the rack to save setup time. I might just try making some front mount aerial adaptors.

I do. It makes it easy to do stupid things like jumping into the crowd (when I'm not tap-dancing on my fx that is).
