Hair Elastics?
Tons of people seem to use them on the guitar neck, but where can I buy the best ones? The ones I've tried have been either too thin or far too wide to fit around the neck

Since you're UK, you can walk in to any Clair's Accesories and take your pick! Personally though for that sort of thing I use a sweatband tied on to the fretboard with a bandana, works a treat

they never work for me. the ones that are loose enough to fit over the tuners, never mute the strings enough, or if they do, it's just the outside strings.

I tied a black sock around the neck of my Jackson; works great and doesn't look too bad

i use a thicker hair tie, pulled tight enough to mute the strings dead, not enough to change the pitch, you just have to knot it so it fits the way you want.
