New Job: Amp Tech
Fuck me if I didn't convince my lead guitarist into new gear... and now I gotta fucking set it all up for him!!
So after finding out that the Rocktron Chameleon has a MIDI controllable wah in it, we found a used one at a local store. I went up there with my FCB1010 and tried it out... and Kevin came up and played on it, and $175 later, he now has eliminated the Digitech Whammy pedal off the floor, along with a power cord & 2 signal cables. So all he has is the FCB and a power cable and MIDI cable for it to worry about now. Nice & efficient! So tomorrow when he gets out of work, I get to wire up his new rig, and figure out how to make it all work. It's going to be this: Nady XR-61 wireless -> Rocktron Chameleon (for wah only) -> Boss NS-2 (depending on whether or not the Hush in the Chameleon can be used efficiently) -> H&K TriAmp [Rocktron Xpression in FX Loop] -> 5150 straight cab. I gotta figure out how to put each unit (amp, chameleon, xpression) on separate MIDI channels. Then it shouldn't be too difficult to do. And he still has to buy new cables for the whole rig (prolly Planet Waves) and a amp case for the H&K and a power conditioner too (and prolly a Behringer BTR-2000). I should make him buy me dinner... ![]() Metal... Nuff Said!! NEXT SHOW: Oct 3rd - IROCK Nightclub, Detroit MI Website: www.justdefymetal.com MySpace: myspace.com/justdefymetal |

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate. We'll cross the streams. |

Sounds like it'll be a cool setup. I'd avoid the BTR-2000 though and go with a Korg DTR-2000. After seeing Waynecustom7's tale of woe about his Behringer I cancelled the order for mine and got the Korg instead. I've had no problems with it.

Well, this is definately going to take a while to get it all working correctly.
So far I've got the FCB set to change the presets on the Xpression, change channels on the amp, and engage/disengage the wah, all correctly. But now I've got levels to fix. Cuz the wah was making way too much noise. But first I've gotta the the head and the Xpression working together. But that's tomorrow's job. Here's a couple pics of the amp for now: ![]() ![]() Damn that's sexay! ![]() |

Finally it's all working correctly!
After playing tone optometrist (does it sound better like this? or like this?) for about 2 hours, we finally got the Chameleon setup to sound very very close to how it sounds going straight into the amp via cable. The only major problem, which isn't too major, is that the Chameleon adds more hiss to the signal than straight into it with a cable does. But Kevin says it's liveable, especially considering he now has a midi controlled wah, which is HUGE to him. Eventually he's going to buy a midi-looper to put the Chameleon into, so he'll get a clean signal going straight into his amp when he's not using the wah, and then just switch the wah into the signal path when he needs it. That'll cut down on that noise entirely. (I can't believe how quiet his amp is otherwise!!). In the end, there's 2 different presets used for his wah's (and when the unit is bypassed, since the preamp still affects the tone even when you bypass the unit). There's a setting for distorted sounds, and one for clean sounds. And they sound fine for now, until he can afford to buy the midi looper. Can't wait for Saturday!!! |
