Tuning

Darn English language! I mean as in electronic tuners etc, the verb 'to tune.'

So how do you all do it? I understand there are various circumstances, but I'm mainly talking about stage preparations.

I generally tune only my a's and d's, everywhere on the fretboard, just to take any minor intonation problems into account by averaging them out right away.

I tune my 7th string either open (if a) or at the 3rd fret (if d), 6th string at the 5th fret, 5th string open, 4th string open, 3rd string at the 2nd fret, 2nd string at the 3rd fret, 1st string 5th fret.

I prefer an analog tuner with a needle, but other kinds are ok as well. When I tune in 19-tET, I need the needle, or else I have to tune all a's and no d's. I'm no good at counting the flashes/second of a strobe or blinky-style tuner.

I tune my lowest string and then the rest up from that making it as good as possible, then I do the 7th & 5th fret thing to make it "good" with the other strings (because my intonation is always off) so chords sound good.

Depends, really, i've used all those methods, except, oddly enough analog needle. My favorite way, was using a VS-II peterson tuner. I love having my intonation accurate to 1/10th of a cent and my strings tuned as such as well, it sounded so much more in tune, it was rediculous.

Edit: You didnt mention harmonics, which some people use to tune by ;p

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

I use the tuner on my V-amp2 the most. But other times I'll just play the 5th fret on, say the low E, then play the open A string and then just tune them like that. Then I'll do the rest of the strings like that, but I mostly use the tuner on my V-amp2.

RIP MIKE

Tuning harmonics with the tuner is really something I never thought of. Tuning harmonics by comparison results in a pretty crazy tempered tuning, but the B and G strings sound a little harsh on most chords that way.

When doing guitar lessons, I use the A440 mechanism on my metronome to tune. I used to have an C265 tuning fork as well, which I find to be totally useless now.

I didn't include pitch pipes, tuning forks, or tone generators either. I guess using those is similar to tuning by ear.

0.1c is a huge precision. I should get one of those. A little pricey, but worth every cent. (<-- bad pun)

Peterson sells a software version of their virtual strobe tuner. Anyone tried this?
I'm thinking of buying the program to use for intonation.

i use this piece of technology called a guitar tuner haha i am too impatient to tune without a guitar tuner, its just so much easier, i'd be lost without it, i won't deny it i have some 'cool tune' piece of shit, but if i can get the notes close, i just tweak em to perfection myself

my electrics get tuned with the tuner on my G-Major. but, when not in the presence of it, i use 5th/4th fretted notes to start, then do harmonics to fine tune.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.
