ENGL Fireball

i played on one of these things last night, through a mesa 2x12 cab with vintage 30's in it... was able to dial in the exact tone i dial in on my vamp on it, and i felt so at home playing through it. using my Rhoads V of course, with dimarzio x2n in the bridge spot, and duncan seth lover in the neck spot... it even sounded great when i was playing with my neck pickup... just all around great sounding amp, i was very impressed by it... it really friggin screamed, probably the coolest sounding tube amp i've ever played through...

http://www.engl-amps.com/e625.html

and 60w is definately plenty for live... maybe i'll try and get one in the future
the thing just screamed, yet it was so chunky, i had the gain knob at maybe 3, when i first played through it the guy who owned it had the knob at 5 or so, holy hell that was a lot of gain, but 3 is still pretty gainy... and it is a master volume type amp, so it sounds great at low volumes too... i'd love to try it out live...

That looks damn nice. How much are they? I imagine a ENGL would be fairly expensive.

Cool stuff. They're definetly great sounding amps, I'm currently saving for one now, with a 2x12.

Dude, those are probably my favorite cabs. Cheap and very transparent. They work great with about any amp.

I've actually never played an Engl - just never found anyone in the area that stocks them. From all accounts they're pretty damned good, and I'm really curious to. I've heard that they don't necessarily cut that well live, but if you were getting enough gain at 3 to keep you happy, odds are that's less the amp and more guys cranking up the gain and wondering why their tone is getting lost behind everything else in the mix.

I agree, 60 watts is more than enough for any venue I've ever played, either because it was enough to fill the club or because I was mic'd up anyway. Hell, I'd be even happier with a 30-watt version, the only gig I ever needed more than the 25 watts my old TSL put out on VPR mode was when I was playing a stupidly loud gig, keeping up unmic'd with a mic'd up band, and I mean, we were painfully loud.

mines got 3 of the sheffield 1290's in it, and a celestion g12m-70 lol... but upon researching, they are incredibly similar speakers, just the 1290's are 90w, so they take more to break up... its neat because they look absolutely identical, and unless you saw the sticker on the back of the magnet you'd think it was the same speaker, even the magnet looks identical...

i've never had to go over half volume on my vamp rig when playing live, even when we played a gig without a PA, and my vamp rig is 135w@8ohm

Actually, that reminds me.

BIG word of warning here, Elysian!!! Don't buy a Fireball just yet!

It's true that Engl have had trouble cutting in a mix situation, so they've actually re-tweaked some amps. They brought out the Powerball V2 this year, which has a re-voiced EQ section and a much more pronounced midrange, so it'll cut better. And I think they improved the built in noise gate too.

Apparently they'll be updating some of the older amps soon too, so you'll be better off waiting as they'll be upgrading the Fireball too.

It doesn't really effect me because I'm still saving up, and by the time I have the money, the new Invader will be out, or they'll have upgraded everything by that stage. Still very annoying, but I'd say hold off and get one of the newer amps, or one of the upgraded amps, like the V2 Powerball.
