Prophesy or voodoo valve?

I'm thinking about picking up a rocktron preamp for recording - and was wondering if anyone had tried either of these units, and could tell me what the difference between them is - because on paper it doesn't look like an aweful lot....

thanks

the do look very similar on paper...except that bottom line figure.

I had a voodu valve online for about 6 years....it broke after a few months and hasnt worked since. My second guitarist in the band bought one on the same day so we would have the same rig...his broke a month after mine.

I liked the sounds out of it for death metal and sparkly cleans. But I never found any inbetweens...like say the Eric Johnson or Holdsworth pathes were nothing close. A cool thing about it over the Chameleon that I liked was a pre and post eq. and pre and post delay so you could do tons of stuff to shape sounds.

I had a guy I know look at it to fix it once. He is an electronics wizard. Built his own home stereo, power amp, pre-amp, tuner...the whole friggin thing. He also built and marketed his own rack tuners for a short period. He said the tube in there meant nothing. That the thing was mostly a MEGA distorion box and the tube didnt shape any sound after all of that over it.

The main thing about it though is that it sounds great when you play alone...but in a band situation, the guitar sound gets cut out...and I eq'd at the time like paul gilbert with the mids all the way up so.....

The Voodu Valve is 10x the unit the Prophesy is. The Prophesy has better effects, but is more Digitech-style overall in nature. It also doesn't have a great gain sound IMO, and it doesn't have a great range of gain. It's heaviest settings aren't really that heavy.

The Voodu Valve, on the other hand, is a wonderful unit with a tremendous gain structure. It's one of the best sounding preamps ever made IMO, and it came from that same mid 90s generation as the Chameleon and the Piranha. That's Rocktron's heyday. They made great gear back then.

Bottom line - IMO, If you're more of an effects guy, get the Prophesy, if you're more of a tone guy, get the VV.
