alright, so after seeing the gnx thread, i feel the need to post about this overlooked everything box.
it will be in sections, and posted through multiple settings. other gnx4 owners, and even owners of earlier models may talk about it.
section:
1-first impressions.
2-layout(input jacks and such)
3- the presets
4-amp modeling
5-effects
6-software and recording.



1. i go this for christmas in 04. i was really excited, as i was wanting a device with effects, a variety of input/output, and an eight track in order to record, and have as backup to my amp. i had played the pod, and loved the tone from it, however, once i began to read into the two devices and compare, it became clear to me just how much more you could do with a gnx. if all you want is a device for effects and amps, by all means, the pod is easier to operate. i told my dad to order the gnx instead, the selling point was actually the eight track.
when i pulled the thing out of the box, the first thing i noticed was how well it was packed. the gnx was nestled in the box, along with a whopping 137 page instruction manual, software, and of course the power adapter. the construction was rugged metal, and believe me, it has taken some hits, and has only one scratch to show for it. i picked up the instruction manual, but then thought, fuck it, let's play with it. i plugged the thing into the pa sitting in my room(a carvin that put me out 1000$) and waited to be amazed. using my seven string halo, i began to shuffle through the 80 presets, out of which 7 were worth using... a marshall, a fender, a tweed, solo, lonestar(blues), and the rotary setting. this was a humongous dissappointment. i was ready to send it back, and almost did, until after talking to another owner, he said "read the manual, and fuck around with the settings. there's tones of tones, you just have to discover them for yourself."
the other dissappointment after receiving it was the need for a cf, which i knew ahead of time, in order to record. so i went to walmart and bought a 512 this gives 96 minutes total recording time, which as many will find, is nowhere near enough.
i started to play with the drum machine, which has become an excellent practice/jamming tool, and played random riffs over it until i had had enough for the day.

so, after a few days, i began to unlock the awesomeness that is the gnx4. the tutorials in the book helped a long way to getting ideas flowing, and i was soon off to nirvana, until my freak accident happened.

this does not have anything to due with digitech, as far as i can tell. i repeat, there is no way to place the blame on anyone here. two weeks after having recieved the unit, i was jamming in my room when i suddenly had to take a piss. i left the gear on, as i was only going to be gone a moment. the bathroom is right next to my room, and they are on the same circuit. i walked into the restroom, and flipped on the light switch...and then, my pa breaks into a horrendous high pitched staticy squeal. and im like what the fuck?
anyway. after testing all the stuff, we realize that it is the gnx that got fucked up, and it gets sent back, still covered under warranty. that is the only problem i have ever had with it. in about four weeks, they send me a new one. now i am ready to start again.

i'm saorry for the delayed reponse. quite alot of personal issues are going on. i will have the post finished for section 2 asap. it will be about the devices hardware mostly, along with general ideas about the presets, so people know what they get when they buy it.
