Suggest to me a new preamp

Im happy with my chameleon, but I want another preamp to mess around with, something signifigantly easier to tweak with (knobs would be very nice for eq/drive/etc.) effects are not necessary as I have a intellifex and g-major but I would like something that can get some serious gain with low noise, tube or solid state doesnt matter

Mesa Racktifier, Marshall JMP-1, Behringer V-Amp Pro, or staying with Rocktron, the Voodoo Valve or Gainiac 2. I've only recently listened to the Gainiac samples, and it rocks. Doesn't say if it's midi switchable or not, but knowing Rocktronit probably is.

I think the best value you can find for a pre that sounds world-class, is the Mesa Studio Pre-Amp. You can find those on eBay for dirt cheap, and they sound amazing - some of the best Mesa tones ever... perfect for metal, rock, or blues. I've seen them go for $250 and they're all tube.

250? are you serious? I'll have to look into them.

Yeah, a lot of those older Mesas can be had very cheap, simply because the Rectifier series is whats popular now. You often can find the Studios or Caliber series amps which many agree trump the Rectifiers for dirt cheap. I've seen DC-5 heads go for $400, while Single Rectos go for $1200. It's cool though, good news for those of us who like to find great deals.
