Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy
These for me were the definative Death albums. I love the guitar tone, but does anyone know how he got it.
I know post Spiritual Healing he used the 8100's, but I don't know what he used before then. Just as a pointer, Svott Burns of Morridound fame, swore by a Marshall 8100, Celestian 4x12 and EMG pickups.

I didn't particularly enjoy my Valvestate. I bought it because of the hype, and I ended up running my GT-6 into it as a distortion pedal to get usable metal tones. I don't know if Chuck ran something into it other than his guitar to get his tone, but my experience with it wasn't that great

In every interview I've read, Chuck stated that he ran straight into the Valvestate besides using reverb and chorus.

I spoke to Tim aymar about his setup on the sound of preserverence and control denied, and he ran like you're saying, and micd about a foot away with an sm57, and micd about 6ft away with an akc 414.

for effects Chucked used a alesis Midiverb GT..for his limited effects...other then that a 8100 on full blast....Man i used to love chucks tone..and still do...what added to death's tone was whomever played guitar with chuck at the time ..i love the "human" cd guitar tones are sick .....but them "symbolic" ..and "individual" sound killer too...

I was always under the impression that he used a Marshall JCM 800 boosted with a Boss DS1 up until Individual Thought Patterns where he switched to the Marshall 8100.

You cannot forget that he ran an X2N in the bridge (and only) position in alder bodied guitar, later it was a 24.75" scale maple ntb with an ebony board (his stealth), earlier I believe it was a 25.5 bolt on with a rosewood board (his Mockingbird and other guitars). I'm pretty certain he used g12t-75s in his cab, and of cource you have his technique which was pretty unique (no rhyme intended there.) Before he started using the 8100 he used an old Randall, but I can't remember the model off hand. That would be what he used on SBG and Leoprosy.
