Broke with GAS

Alright, I'll air it all out right now. I'm broke and I'm looking for a new amp. Now broke for me doesn't mean I have to search for a used Mesa, no no no! Broke for me means I've got $300 cash and thats it. I've been checking into Line 6 heads because I want an amp that'll crunch up like old Priest or Rush and then flip over to Immortal or Thyrfing and everything between. Since I'm not an active musician and I'll probably never need to gig with it, but I want something simple that offers more than my Crate G600XL (Wet dog fart tone).
I've read alot of good and bad thing about Line 6, mainly right now I'm looking into the Flextone II HD and both Spider II heads. All of them have the same problems. I've researched every review site I can find and came up with pretty much the same stuff for each, broken input jacks, power loss and all around more trouble than they're worth. Any help?

if you're not in a gigging situation, why not just get a nice amp modeller (like the PODxt or Boss GT8) and hook into it with a pair of headphones? that'd be a pretty cheap route to take, given your financial position.

i don't know what the Crate G600XL is, is it just a head? do you have a speaker cab?

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

I already have a half stack. Crate G600XL is a horrible head from the early 90's. And that sits ontop a Crate BV412. I was just looking to upgrade to a better head because at this point I'm sick of dealing with the one I've got.

could get a vamp pro and floorboard for under 300, dunno how well that crate would work through the clean channel, but if it didn't work you could expand the vamp pro with a solid state power amp and you'd be set

Why not get a Smokey?

I messed around with the V-Amp one time when we got one in used from the store i used to work at. Definately Wouldnt have been my pick. My suggestion, is if you're looking for something to just play at home with, try a Vox Ad-30. Its a 30 watt Combo amp with a Tube preamp and a solid state power amp.

Its probably the best tone you can get for 240$.

I forgot about those. I used the 1x12 version once at a practice. Of course I had to mic it and run it through a pa but it sounded damn good.

My suggestion = Buy a PODxt Live and run it to the effects return on your Crate. The Crate would be nothing more than a poweramp and you'd have more tone options than you know what to do with.
