The Ultimate Tone

Yeah that's right. Got your attention ha?

TNE

I've been analyzing this a lot lately. "If I had all the gear I ever sold" and all that shit. I got a kick ass setup I like which I'm sure you've all seem me pic whoring on this site.

Well the ear it seems is an odd thing. I don't know what it is. One day a tone sounds FTW and the next day

So I'm coming to terms with the fact that the "ultimate tone" does not exist.

Which got me thinking about EVH. Here's the greatest guitarist on the planet, I guess. I mean everyone loves him, whether he's the best is an opinion. However my point is this. All the years in Van Halen you never really saw the guy. He was hardly ever in interviews. You saw him in videos and concerts, but where the hell was the guy really?

In the dungeon, messing with knobs.

So I've decided to try and come up with a universal definintion of this disorder. One word we can all exchange on here and hopefully spread throughout the universe.

I say we first compile a list, then a valid definition. There are so many variables involved, it's exciting as well as staggering at the same time.

So I'd like to both

A. Discuss in detail the disorder described above and the implications and ramifications of it such as a subpart I coin "CSG - constant gear shuffle"
B. Submit your vote for a word with an acronym describing the disorder.

I am going to start off with

UTD (Universal Tone Disorder) - A condition where there is no known cure. A condition that can best be described as hearing what you think is the ultimate tone after hours of turning knobs and flipping switches, only to find that the next day the tone you though you loved, you actually now are less than enthralled with.

GUESS WHAT I'VE GOT? Fitzgibbons 5000 ultra synapse accellerator which allows me to think faster than the masses and phase in and out of the matrix at will.

I don't have a name for this, but I'm sure lots of people glorify the tone of equipment they used to own, or have tried briefly in the past. They then proceed to (re)acquire said equipment and find themselves very disappointed. So really the "tone in your head" doesn't actually exist.

I pretty much nailed the tone I wanted, too. I love modeling

Fender Standard Telecaster w/ Dimarzio ToneZone(bridge)
Schecter C-7 Blackjack w/ '59(neck) and JB(bridge)
Sigma Acoustic (CGCEGC)
Line6 Flextone III XL

My acoustic stuff

I'm getting pretty damn close with my PODxt Live's Big Bottom patch with the Vetta Juice stomp and a bit of Sine Chorus turned on or off as needs be. I think I need to fiddle with my pickups a bit. I think my answer my be more DS7s and after listening to Chris' clip, some DA7s...

God bless you Line 6.

I went to the London International Music Show last weekend and got Chris George of Marshall to demo the JVM410 to me. I finally found the tone I was looking for all these years, and it was exactly what I pictured in my head. Especially after I was losing faith in Marshall altogether.

But I do know what you mean about having your amp sound awesome one day and "meh" the next, without changing anything. But that goes for anything. You might write a riff you think is awesome and later on think "damn thats pretty crap". Could be anything, but it is a mental state for sure.

At the end of the day, most of us will seldom write tracks jsut to be heard by a Guitar and Amp alone. For me, if it sounds great as part of a band, I've succeeded. Not much point me creating a great sound for my bedroom if it sucks in a rehearsal/gig.
