Anybody here own a 5150?

More specifically the combo? I have yet to hear one, I own a 5150II head and 5150 cab, it sounds crushing. But the clean tone lacks, and im playing lots of cleans now. So I wanted to downsize, by selling off my 1/2stack and getting a 2x12 5150 combo and then a nice fender amp, do you have any soundclips of a 7 string on the 5150? How do you think they compare tonewise? Because like I said I really like the tone it has, but man the fooker is big and heavy. And yes I know the 2x12 and the other amp will be big, but at least I will have way better tone.

You realize that there is a slight (though it is there) difference between the 5150II's and the 5150 combo's lead channel, right? Generally the 5150 combo clean channel was better bone stock because they were biased much warmer, so take that into consideration too. Not to mention the combo is gonna weigh around 90lbs.

my other guitarist use to have a 5150 combo. cleans were very plain sounding, and it shar's its EQ with the lead channel. i plugged my RG7 into it and it was pretty dry... probably due to the open back.

"are there gonna be snacks? i heard there were gonna be snacks."

My 5150 combo had a closed back - so I don't know about your friends 5150, maybe he took the back off himself?

The gain was great on mine - I just could'nt get the low end that I wanted. The combo amp seems (to me anyway) to be very middy ( a lot of mids ) even when I ran it through an Ampeg 412 cabinet! So if thats what you are looking for, then????

The cleans were not anywhere near Fender like - actually the clean channel is great for blues - my 5150 combo was completely retubed with Groove Tubes - I used a #5 set of power tubes - there are (2) power tubes, (5) preamp tubes.

Yeah, unless he opened it up, it should have a closed back.
The 5150 combo, I feel, is one of the best 2x12 combos out there. I don't have any sound clips from when I had one but it did sound pretty damn mean. You just have to be careful with the gain on these beasts. I think I barely ran mine over 4.

Get a recto... 5150 distortion that is more brutal, powerful, and articulate, with a nice clean channel. I sold my 5150 head for a Single .

Get a Madison!!! The guy who invented them built the amp to eliminate the need to lug around both of his favorite amps all the time... Recto and 5150.

He came up with something better IMO. They make a 50 watt combo that sells for around $700 new if I remember right.

+1 the same guy that had the 5150 has a madison and its fuckin sick! bright cleans, chunky overdrive with enough gain to keep up any recto (although it has some tonal similarities with the recto its more of a "modded marshall" type of gain) and the lead channel carries an insane amount of super tight gain.

I have a 6506 combo (which is the newly renamed 5150, in case you weren't aware) and I like it a lot. I tried several Mesas and numerous other brands before I bought it. I tried a single and a dual Rec and actually wasn't that impressed. It sounded good, but the gain just didn't give me that evil edge that I was looking for. That said, everyone's taste varies, and I have heard plenty of Rectos that I did like. In the end, $700 for a the 6505 combo was a deal too good to pass up.

I tried out the clean channel before I bought it and it was just average. But that was no big deal, as I had a Fender that was great on the clean channel. Needless to say, after getting the 6505 home and playing it, I got it setup to the point where it almost matched the Fender. I ended up selling the Fender as I needed the money and couldn't justify keeping both amps when the 6505 was good enough - add a little chorus and it fleshes out the tone.

Anyway, I am a happy owner of a 6505/5150 and I haven't played an amp yet that beat it anywhere in the price range. If you want a kick-ass high gain sound, you won't be disappointed.

This is RETARDEDLY off topic, but does anyone know the story of what happened to the whole Eddie Van Halen/Peavey partnership thing. The Wolfgang is gone, they changed the name of the 5150. What gives? Did Hartley and Eddie have a falling out?
