Tubes
My Peavey Classic 50/50 just doesn't seem to have as much presence or volume as a dual 50-watt tube power amp should have. I believe it's still on its original set of tubes, and i don't know what the total number of hours are likely on them (bought the amp second hand). So i'm thinking of re-tubing it to see if i can get back some of that tube warmth, depth and presence back.
Any recommendations for some good EL-84s and 12AX7s and where to get them? |

Hmm. For the drivers, the Groove Tubes G12AX7-M (Mullard reissues) get a lot of praise, but they're damn expensive. For the phase inverters, balanced JJs should be fine. For EL34s, the JJs seem to get high marks.
Keep in mind you'll probably need to get it biased, too... |

I've had good luck with JJ's, but my suggestion would be to email Doug at www.dougstubes.com and tell him what you are looking for in regards to tone. He is a great guy who is very knowledgeable and ships quick. He helped me retube my 5150, and it does sound damn good at this point.

JJs - seriously, it's no bullshit what you hear about these tubes - I threw jjs into a 5150 and it turned into fucking monster.

i've had experience with stock Mesa tubes versus JJ high gain rating tubes from eurotubes.com. the JJ's blow the stock Mesa's out of the water.
for 9 tubes (5 12AX7's and 4 EL84's) they cost me about $80 shipped.
I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate. We'll cross the streams. |

Ruby actually makes a good EL84. JJ tubes are top notch but I've never tried the EL84's.
